We stayed 2 nights at the Holiday Inn recently, and were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the hotel. We commented that so many hotels are faceless, with only the very contemporary or traditional ( like this one) standing out
The hotel was the former station hotel of the long departed Northern line into Sheffield and its former grandeur shows with high ceilings, chandeliers and cornices and gold leaf galore. It has grand staircases and large rooms - we loved the bar (lots of comfy leather settees) and the restaurant. The Terry Gorman pictures on the corridor walls were great too ( a local Sheffield artist with an almost Lowryesque style). The lift was small for the size of the hotel but guess there are restrictions with a building of this age and it is only 3 floors high
The Holiday Inn is set in an area of hotels at the end of a ramp with nice garden areas outside its entrance, an absolute mass of FREE secure parking (the hotel is set on the edge of the city centre so free parking is an absolute boon) - the Hilton is over the road, the Park Inn at the end of the drive, and the Travelodge and Ibis nearby
Our main issue with the hotel was the area of town it is on the edge of (the markets area) is stuck in the 1970s and is due a much needed revamp - by day it is fine but it was not the nicest walk through the fairly deserted area by night (it is only a short taxi ride into the city so this isnt a huge problem) - the hotel is on the doorstep of the Ponds Forge international swimming complex, handy for the station and tram links
The city centre is changing for the better at the minute, with the Peace Gardens and Winter Gradens area very nice and with several decent bars and restaurants
The hotel itself had decent sized rooms, yes the bathroom could have been slightly bigger in our standard room but the room itself was a decent size and the bathroom was well refurbished with a contemporary feel and a decent bath and shower
Breakfast was very good from a large buffet style choice and the staff were all very friendly and helpful ( to the extent of bringing a fried egg to the table when they weren't ready at the time i had the rest of my plate stocked with items from the hot buffet)
We would definitely not hesitate to stay there again when visiting Sheffield
