I am not too easily disappointed by hotels but my recent experience at this establishment was most distressing especially as I have come to expect a lot the Holiday Inn brand.
Unusually for me, I arrived at the hotel at a decent hour to find the reception quite deserted. After some considerable while, I heard the sound of voices from behind the counter and practiced my politest cough which developed into a coughing fit before I managed to attract the attention of a member of staff.
I was dismissed to find my own way to the room via an ancient lift which had clearly seen better days. The room was distinctly average with dusty curtains and a bed that sagged in the middle. The carpet was well worn and the décor shabby. …not at all like a Holiday Inn and I was beginning to doubt whether I might even use my priority card.
The bathroom defies description ….unless that description is VERY SMALL. The modern washbasin was inaccessible unless you placed one foot on the toilet seat….seriously!!! I was so shocked that I had to take a picture with my mobile phone as I was completely sure you would never believe me.
By now the restaurant had closed and I had been earlier advised to try for a bar meal. Unfortunately, this necessitated more hanging around as there was no one in the bar. After a ten minute wait, I had to go back to the reception and practice my coughing again before placing my order and waiting in the vast bar area where I proved to be the only customer.
Breakfast was OK although I learned much about the TV viewing habits of the staff who were more interested in talking to one another than looking after their guests.
Finally, to cap it all, the hotel denied all knowledge of my conference booking and seemed completely unconcerned that 25 delegates were shortly due to arrive for a conference booked some months earlier.
The conference organiser (although I use the word organiser loosely) eventually found the necessary paperwork and proceeded to set up a substandard room for the meeting…..what a disaster and, worse than that, what a pity that no-one from the hotel even bothered to speak and apologise for their error.
Fortunately, I shall not be rushing back to Sheffield and when I do I shall ask my company to take some account of the reviews on these pages when booking me into a hotel or else booking a conference.
