“Lovely Contemporary Rooms and beatiful gardens!”

Milton Keynes

All the rooms in the hotel have been refurbished now.
My parents stayed in the Hurlstone Suite (lovely!) and our room was also very modern and funky.
The reception area is more traditional but still fresh.
Bar area really nice with candles on at night.
Reasonable prices in bar for food and drinks.
Very friendly staff.
I think some review seem outdated to what we found - we'd stay there again.

“£90 a night? you have to be joking!!”

The Rutland Hotel

26 Jan 2008

I frequently stay in hotels in this price range on business travel, so I am used to online price reductions bagging the basic level rooms availabe in a hotel..... BUT
This didn't measure up to a much lower rating - and the hotels own webpage price of £90 would be a joke for the accomodation on offer. Given that the hotel was almost empty, it seems odd to have been given a box room at the furthest point.

Check in staff were less than welcoming, no offer to assist with luggage, no lift to access lower floor - just long corridors and endless sets of small steps down to an area which smelled very musty and resembled bedsit land more than a 3* hotel.
Tiny room offered an uncomfortable bed, with bedding too small for the mattress - leaving everything untucked and covers sliding to the floor within an hour of using the bed.
Tiny towels added to the cheapskate feel.
Traffic noise seemed incessant.

Breakfast was the saddest buffet table I have seen in a long while - the "pastries dish" was a sideplate contaiining just 2 tired looking croissant and an overcooked pain au chocolat.
To be fair, the cooked breakfast was reasonable although mine - and two other diners - plates arrived missing one or other item ordered.

The only redeeming factor were the friendly, competent, restaurant and bar staff.

Very poor value for money - catering to a captive hospital and University trade, due to the lack of hotels in this area -

“Not that bad!”

The Rutland Hotel

17 Jan 2008

I didn't recognise the place from the descriptions in the reviews on here! I can only assume that the other reviewers had been staying in unrenovated rooms. The one we had (62) was modern, stylish and well appointed. And yes, it's a little bit of a walk from reception and downstairs, but it's an old, rambling building so what do you expect? It's built on a hillside so it's hardly the basement - reception is at the ground floor entrance further up the hill from the entrance from the car park - the level where our room was. Breakfast was plentiful, good quality, and included in the £95 room rate.

If what you want from a hotel is a modern, soul-less box, then why bother booking a hotel in an old building? Save your money and stay in the Travelodge instead.

“Never Again”

The Rutland Hotel

23 Aug 2007

I have just returned from a visit to Sheffield , I booked this hotel not knowing about this web site , When i arrived i was given the keys to room 50, i had to walk quite a way , down some stairs to what looked like the basement, When i walked into the room the smell was really bad , the room was damp , dull ,The room was horrible, mould around the window, wallpaper hanging off the walls and ceiling, yellow curtains, stains on the quilt and the carpet was filthy.
and not very nice at all , i went back to the reception to tell the lady on the desk i was not happy with the room. she then handed me keys to room 24 , again i had to walk a long way to get to the room , this room did not smell of damp like no 50 did , but it was very small , the shower did not work very well ,again there was wall paper peeling away from the walls , there was a very large damp patch on the ceiling of this room . I was not very happy with my stay at the hotel . and i am very dissapointed with paying £89.99 .Overall I would say this is probably the worse hotel i have ever stayed in

“Not the best hotel...”

I too wished I had read the reviews of this hotel before staying here, fortunately I was only staying the one night.
The reception staff were friendly and courteous, though on reflection i think they were just being apologetic as they knew what the rooms are like (appaling).
Breakfast is a joke, poor service and chaotic. I only wanted poached eggs on toast and they couldn't even get that right. In the end I gave up on the idea of actually being served my meal and went out to catch breakfast elsewhere. Plenty of good hotels in Sheffield so give the Rutland a miss.
