“Excellent stay”

The Beauchief Hotel

4 Mar 2008

We stayed at the Beauchief on Saturday 1st March. We did not know the area but were attending a wedding at the nearby Whirlowbrook Hall.

The wedding venue recommended the Beauchief and some 15 members of our family booked to stay there.

I was apprehensive after reading some of the previous recent reviews but was pleasantly relieved.

We arrived well before the 2pm check in time and our room was ready and we were welcomed by the reception staff. The room was clean and comfortable and the whole hotel looked clean, modern and welcoming.

We had a bar meal for lunch which was very good and breakfast the following morning in the main restaurant which was excellent.

All the staff we encountered were pleasant, helpful and welcoming.

We were provided with an iron on request.

The reception staff were happy to book taxis for us and the company used were reliable, prompt and reasonable.

I could not fault the hotel and it would apprear that previous negative reviews are from guests staying at the hotel before the recent change in management or one recent review in particular from a disgruntled ex-employee.

I would recommend the Beauchief Hotel unreservedly.

“Terrible hotel”

Avoid at all costs. This hotel has has a bad reputation for a long time but was recently taken over and so we thought we would give it another try. What a mistake. The decor may have changed but the attitude of the staff certainly has not. Rude and ignorant are just a couple of the ways to describe them. They seem to think they are doing you a favour. There are plenty of good hotels not far from this and I suggest that you use one of those. In addition, I have spoken to many people who have also tried the hotel again after the takeover and opinions all seem to be the same - dont give it another chance!

We have just come back from having a lovely meal at the beauchief hotel's restaurant. The whole meal was really nice. its not to posh just in the middle with the meal and the friendly service staff just made it wounderful.
On talking to our waitress she told us that the hotel has now been taken over by another company and she said it is now not run by the corus group.
The restaurant / bar and the function room has just all been refurbished in a browny colour, modern but tasteful we thought.
So on the whole we both think the new owners are taking the hotel in the right way to get it back to how it was, but bring it up to date which we felt on the whole with the restaurant it is doing.

“Extremely dirty”

We chose to stay here because we were attending a christening close by, and on the net it was advertised as part of the Corus Hotel group and seemed rather nice.

On arrival we were directed to a ground floor twin room, (room 108). When we entered the room we immediately noticed a tear in one of the duvet covers and a rip in the net curtains. As first impressions go, it was not a good start, but when looking around things got worse. Closer inspections revealed from 3 out of the 4 wall lights hung cobwebs that were thick with dust, the windows were filthy, the window cill, skirting boards and bedheads were full of dust. The trouser press was ingrained with dirt and the carpet was badly stained. In the bathroom the extractor fan did not work, there were hairs in the bath and sink, cracked wall tiles, and the grout and mastic was covered with mildew. But probably the most alarming thing was that both the hairdryer and kettles electrical testing stickers were well out of date, by years not months.

We complained at reception and was offered room 109 which was directly accross the corridoor. After a quick look round room 109 it did not appear to be any better than room 108.

We were told there was no other rooms available as there was a wedding reception at the hotel that night and that we could speak to the manager but that it could take up to an hour for him to see me. As we had arrangements in Sheffield almost immediately, we declined the offer to wait for him and we were assured he would be there the following morning.

Following breakfast the next day we spoke to the manager and explained to him about how disappointed we were with out stay at the hotel. We outlined our concerns and was told that as a goodwill gesture he wouldn't charge us for the breakfast. Although we explained that we didn't mind paying for the breakfast as this had been fine ( it was the room we were extremely disappointed with ) he stated this was the only gesture he could make to make amends. We subsequently wrote to the Corus Hotel group who told us that the Hotel hadn't been part of the chain since May 07 (so why were they still advertising with them?) and we would have to take the matter up with the hotel. We have done so, with no response.

The minimum we expect when staying at a hotel is cleanliness and a compliance with safety regulations. Unfortunately the Beauchief was unable to provide either.

Firstly, if following this review you are still inclined to visit this hotel. Please be advised that for the purposes of sat nav you will find the hotel on Abbeydale road South S7 NOT Abbeydale road S7. This error (taken straight off the confirmation booking) cost us an additional 45mins of Sheffield city centre traffic.
The whole appearance of the hotel is "grubby", though the decor does little to help this, you cant fail to feel it would benefit from a meaningful vacumn and a wash down.
My room smelt unpleasant. Not in a way like until recently it was a smoking room, more like it had been flooded perhaps by the stream in the grounds. The bathroom had significant mildrew, and there was a used cotton bud on the bedroom window sill from a previous tennant. There is a reasonably priced bar attached to the hotel serving drinks and bar snacks but whilst reading the menu I noticed two rats crossing the beer garden directly outside the open door into the bar and found myself suitably put off the idea. Finally, trying to leave the hotel in peak travel times is also challenging as it is situated on a very busy road.
