I booked a single room for a one night stay in January purely based on the cheap price. I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised!

I didn;t check in until after 10pm and the staff were great. Very heplful and friendly. They even brought me a drink up to my room.

The room was small and strangely arranged but it was clean. The was a fair bit of noise from outside till late and room was quite cold, so I didn't sleep well.

There was a fair choice of breakfast dishes. I had beans on toast! Not too much can go wrong with that!

The reception staff had booked me a cab and were really helpful when it didn't turn up on time and kept calling the cab office checking for me.

One night was fine. Next time I go to Sheffield I will be staying longer and probably would not stay at Cutlers again only because the room was cold and the noise from the street outside.

Great staff! Couldn't praise them more! very helpful!

We were seduced by the web site -- it looks a classy place, but the truth is different. The rooms are cramped and airless, the cleaning is patchy and the public areas are shabby. The hotel is no better than a Travelodge, but charges much more. The only thing going for it is the location, but there is no free parking in the area.
Everything is penny pinching -- small towels, one pack of biscuits, one hot chocolate in the rooms. It could be nice, but it needs to be well managed.

Having stayed at a number of Sheffield hotels for business, I now use the Culters. Yes the public areas are a bit tired. However the majority of bedrooms have recently been refurbished, with comfortable beds and free broadband access (something other hotels charge £10+ for). The staff are always very friendly and helpful, without being over bearing. Breakfast is usually freshly cooked and served at the table. My only real complaint is the noise from dust carts early in the morning as they empty bins of local businesses. If you want something grand, then this hotel is not for you. If you want something functional, at reasoanble cost and friendly staff - give it a try.

“Acceptable but could do better...”

Cutlers Hotel

As I think other reviews have said, Cutlers Hotel seems to fall somewhere between being a pretty nice hotel and a not very good one.

The location is great - right in the city centre, perfect for theatres/sightseeing. My room was fine, although a bit cramped - the furniture didn't quite seem to fit - and rather noisy (building work nearby?). The bathroom was good. Breakfast (I ordered room service) was fine and came at the time I'd requested.

However, there were some niggles, perhaps down to inexperienced members of staff, such as having to wait for 15 minutes to get into my room, and no one being able to tell me whether I could have a late check-out, even on the morning of my departure! The fact that the hotel phones weren't working so I had to keep going down to reception, only to find that no one could answer what must be a common question, was particularly annoying. But to be fair, other members of staff were helpful and friendly.

So overall, I wouldn't rave about this hotel, but it's ok, and has the potential to be much better.
