I have stayed here in December with my girlfriend. The rooms were clean and well-appointed and had obviously been refurbished. The bed was very comfortable. The high windows were a nice touch in the room. Location was perfect. I have just read what the lady named liselocket mentioned about the rooms. I'am afraid I do not agree at all. The staff was very efficient, helpful and friendly. We will definitely stay here again.

Had Christmas party here, stayed overnight - never again. Food was stale, flies in drinks, glasses even smelt dirty! Beef was like shoe leather, bread was stale. Waiter spilt soup down silk evening dress. Manager promised to sort it out, dress was dry cleaned by hotel, they didn't remove soup and spoilt the dress by ironing it. Over 6 weeks later am still waiting for dress to be returned or money back for dress (was brand new for the evening and gave a copy of the receipt to the Manager who is now not returning calls or replying to e-mail. Carpets were threadbare, no telephones in rooms the list is endless.

“Cutler's Hotel - Halfway refusbished!”

Cutlers Hotel

As a girl who lived in Sheffield for 4 years, when I went back this week, I picked the Cutlers because of it's location. It is pretty much as central as you can get... You turn right out the front door and you're at the tram and bus stop... turn left and you're outside the Crucible theatre (where there is an NCP carpark underneath).

The hotel is in the middle of a refurb and it is a bit old an tired in parts. One of the doors off the hallway to my parent's room would have taken your hand off if you didn't get it out of the way fast enough because the door slammer didn't work. In my parents room their bathroom door was slightly off the hinges and the bathroom was tired and had a wire hanging out the ceiling. My room was pretty nice though, I got a free upgrade from a single to a double and all the bedroom furniture, plug points etc were new. I also had a DVD player which was pretty good and I understand they're getting plasma screens. Again, the bathroom was tired with a couple of cracked tiles, side of bath cracked and a wire hanging out the ceiling but I imagine when this is re-fitted it will look much better.

I had to ask for my windows to be shut as they were very high up... I couldn't sleep with them open at all as it is very noisy in the middle of town and I had to turn the radiator off as it was soooo warm!

Word of caution if you're in Room 202 is that the door doesn't always close properly so do check it's slammed shut... I came back and realised i'd left it open so good thing no-one had gone in there!!

The staff were really friendly and obliging and the food was very nice. It was £175 for 4 nights B&B and if you want a base then this is perfect because both Unis are easily accessible and so is Meadowhall. It is not really what you want for a romantic getaway though!!

I made the judgement on where to stay from (a) the proximity to the city centre and (b) the website, where it states it is “Sheffield’s premier, independently owned, boutique hotel” and “the ultimate in contemporary luxury”. They also state that each bedroom includes such features as remote control digital television, WIFI Internet access, direct dial telephones with PC modem points, hairdryer and trouser press.

At the time of booking I was not informed that the hotel would be in a state of renovation, that the bedrooms would smell of paint, and that tv & telephones would not be available – otherwise I would have either forewarned my guests or indeed booked elsewhere. None of this was mentioned on your website, nor when I reserved or arrived.

For info, the same spare rib bones, and other litter, that I encountered on the pavement outside the hotel on my arrival at 3.30pm on Thursday were still there on Friday at 9am when I left.

The staff were good & helpful, both at reception and during the evening meal. However, the quality of the evening meal was very poor indeed. The main course was a real throwback to what British cooking used to be like; flavourless over-cooked lamb, flavourless under-cooked vegetables, a glut of both roast & new potatoes, no mint sauce. The dessert was described as Chocolate Rum Truffle, but appeared to be an unfrozen, tasteless chocolate cake with a white rum truffle ball on top.

I won't be staying there again
