We didnt read the other reviews till the night before we stayed here.We booked it with 3 friends because of its location near Eccleshall Rd as we were meeting up with some local friends there. When we arrived at about 4pm to book in the main door was firmly shut & it looked like no one was home.
We waited abt 5 mins & several knocks later the lady of the house (Sue I presume) answered. We went into the hall. She couldnt quite get her head around the fact that 2 of our party were coming on later & that the 2 people behind us were a seperate check in.Our local friend explained that she wanted to come up with us to see our rooms as she wanted somewhere to recommend to friens & family but "Sue" wasnt exactly inviting to her either & gave her no encouragement to have a look around as potential buisness-She just crisply asked her "have you got a booking?" despite my friends explanation.
WE climbed the stairs to the family room on the top floor (not easy when you are 6 mths pregnant in the heat & with a tired 5 yr old). The room was pleasant though very warm. Some wires were sticking out of the wall above the childs bed though taped up.There was an adequate electrical shower. We had to pre book the time we wanted breakfast & what we wanted. The selection was good & the veggie breakfast was exellent with Linda Macartney sausages etc
On balance I wd say this should be a B&B not a hotel. The best bit is breakfast & location & the worst bit is the "welcome".WE ate at the hotels restaurant on Eccleshall Rd (? 543)-The food was good & reasonably priced.

I was booked into this hotel by friends of mine who live in Sheffield that I was visiting for the weekend. I saw the other reviews before I went and was concerned but due to the location I decided to stick with the booking and I have to say I completely disagree with the other reviewers.

I received a warm and friendly welcome from the owners, who were also very helpful when I needed a map and directions to the restaurant where I was due to meet my friends that evening.

My room was clean and comfortable with all the usual facilities that I would expect from a B&B style hotel. My breakfast of poached eggs was delicious and it was good to be able to order something that was low fat!

I thouroughly enjoyed my stay and will return next time I visit Sheffield.

I've travelled to Sheffield a number of times and only ever stayed in the larger, chain hotels.

Unfortunately on my last visit I had real problems booking into any of my usual haunts, and ended up at the Westbourne.

I have to say that I'd normally avoid a small, privately owned hotel but after enjoying Sue and Nick's hospitality I'll definitely be returning.

The hotel is a large old Victorian house that's full of delightful period features. My room was exceptionally clean and although the hotel was full, my stay was peaceful, quiet and uninterrupted.

The location of the hotel is excellent - close to shops, bars and restaurants in Broomhill and on Ecclesall Rd. The University and city centre are also nearby.

The food was excellent and considering the quality I didn't mind booking my meal the night before. Given the choice of a freshly prepared full English or a lukewarm buffet that has sat on a hotplate for several hours, I'll take the food at the Westbourne any time. My partner who is a vegetarian also enjoyed the selection of breakfasts avaliable to her.

I'd thoroughly reccomend this hotel to anyone.

Our experience was pretty much the same as the previous three!

While the room was pleasant enough, it certainly wasn't worth the price you pay. We stayed five nights and were given one tiny bar of soap to last the whole time we were there.

The food was average (below average if you are a vegetarian).

Nick was pleasant, though not overly welcoming. However, Sue was very rude and seemed to be annoyed every time we needed her help with something (like to check out for example)!

Not only was she rude to us, but she also talked down to her staff in front of customers.

We would definitely not return to this hotel!

I stayed in the hotel one week when attending a conference in Sheffield. I had informed the owners about the dates when I arrive and when I leave by e-mail. As I was leaving, it turned out that the landlady had maken a mistake and expected me to leave only on the next day. Even though it was her mistake and even though I had copies of my e-mails, she charged me for the extra night. Besides, she was being extremely unpolite and rude. As I was busy catching my flight and being a foreigner and not knowing whom to contact, I had other choice than to pay.

As to the accommodation, the house was pretty and the rooms nicely decorated. However, there were some problems too: the floors were squeezing, there was an odour of an old house in the building and the shower the strangest I've ever seen (a white electrically operated box on the wall).

What was odd, was the behaviour of the couple who owned the house. Even though you were a paying customer, they treated you like you had been an intruder in their house. You had to order the day before what you wanted to have for breakfast and report the exact time when you going to have. Still, when you arrived in the breakfast room, they started to make it from a scratch so that you had to wait some 20 minutes before you got you had ordered. The coffee was weak and the background music awful. They only had two cd-discs and even though I like James Taylor, I don't want to hear "You've got a friend" on seven consequtive mornings.

I much regretted my choice even when staying in the hotel and even more so after the finald episode and the extra night they charged. I would not go there again, especially as there are also other hotels nearby.
