Due to its unique location the RCH is one of those hotels that you feel you should visit at least once during your lifetime and I imagine most of their guests fall into this category - we certainly did. I'd walked or driven past the property a few times in the past and always wondered what lay behind the understated facade so when my wife said that she'd like to go to Bath for a weekend break I took the plunge. I booked a decent category room (£420 per night) and expected something special (well you would wouldn't you?) but sadly we were disappointed. Whilst the view was lovely the room was very tired and badly in need of updating, particularly the bathroom which was actually unacceptable given the high room rate. Gardens and Spa were great and the service just about okay but no more. We also decided to eat at their Dower House restaurant which again, whilst very nice, didn't quite justify it's price tag of £60 each for three courses. £29 for a glass of Remy XO is also verging on theft!

I imagine that the hotel gets away with it because lots of people (from all over the world) want to tick the box and say that they've been there. What's sad is that you just don't like it enough to return and end up feeling a bit ripped off.

“Delicious Dining and Delightful Grounds”

Royal Crescent Hotel

2 Jun 2008

As a local I did not stay at the hotel, but simply took my mother to lunch in the hotel's Dower House restaurant. After a week of rain the sun came out and the grounds were idylic. Sipping Champagne in the garden prior to lunch, nothing was too much trouble for the extremely smart waiting staff - very young but clearly experienced.

A rather limited de jour menu choice, but after taking the plunge the dishes were nothing short of sublime. Mushroom soup as smooth as silk, pork belly too delicious to begin to describe, panache of fish and a liver dish could not be surpassed. Well perhaps except for the desserts, my parfait with its chilled Melon soup was the best dessert I have ever tasted, whilst my guest felt the chocolate tart was an indulgence too far. She felt compelled to leave a tiny sliver on her plate.

The Dower House Restaurant was certainly on top form that day - thank you for a most enjoyable afternoon.

We stayed one night, it was a gift from my daughter, so we dont know how much but looking at the website you would be looking in the region of about £200 a night and we based our review on paying this much.

Fantastic location, from the outside it didnt look anything, just one of the Regency Town Houses. We were greeted at the door by the valet, who promptly removed our cases to our room and took care of the car (car parking valet service £5 a day). The entrance was nothing to write home about, but I expect there are restrictions on what you can do with a listed building. Our room was huge, as was the bathroom, typical regency decoration, very comfortable bed. We over looked the garden, which was about to be given its summer make over. There is a new spa, I found this to be very dark inside, but the pool was nice and warm and there was a couple of hot tubs to relax in, as well as steam and sauna rooms. The restaurant is beautiful, we had booked to have a meal but when we saw that it was £50 a head for two courses we headed off into town as there pleanty of restaurants to suite all palates and pockets. The breakfast was the best we have ever had, everything was fresh, home made and well presented. It was just like going back in time, perhaps a little too fussy for our taste but we still had a very enjoyable time.

“Could do much better”

Royal Crescent Hotel

I stayed at this hotel about ten years ago and had a great time so was really looking forward to a return visit, booked by my husband, as a special surprise. As he couldn't travel with me, he asked for a large twin suite for me and a (female) friend, paid in advance for bed, breakfast and dinner and booked spa treatments for us both and was given lots of assurances about how well we would be looked after:

So - we arrived, to find the suite made up as a double with only one name on the door. We were told that there weren't enough single covers to make the beds look like twins. The suite wasn't large enough to separate the beds properly and the view of Bath could be seen only by standing on tiptoe as we were behind a roof parapet. Complaints were met by shrugging of shoulders but no offer of an alternative room.

At the spa, there was no-one to greet us and when someone finally appeared she didn't look too pleased to see us and couldn't be bothered to show us around properly. The sauna was out of order and a workman was in and out of the spa area without any warning to clients. Very disappointing and not a relaxing experience at all, particularly when the receptionist processed our payment (approx £200) while polishing her own nails.......

At dinner, french lamb was unavailable by 8.15pm, leaving only one other meat choice which included offal, which neither of us like. The sommelier was also incredibly rude when we ordered white wine. Despite being informed that my friend cannot drink red wine at all, she insisted that the cheapest bottle of red on the menu would suit us much better. We declined.

At no time did anyone ask if we were having a good time. I will not return here in a hurry.......

We stayed at the Royal Crescent at the beginning of April for 3 nights - it was fantastic. We arrived on Sunday about 11.00am expecting our bags to be looked after until the check in time of 3.00pm, but luckily for us no one had stayed in our room the night before so we could check in straight away and our car was valet parked so no worries about finding somewhere. The hotel upgraded us to the Beau Nash suite which was gorgeous - the greenhouse room was simply divine. The hotel has an amazing outlook - stunning views and scenery.
We were booked into the hotel's resturant for the 3 nights that we stayed and the food was absolutely amazing, as was the service. Particularly loved the apple and fig tart tatin!!!!
If you visit this hotel, you must take the time to visit the Bath House - I booked in for a facial, massage and reflexology and was very impressed - Georgie and Pam were fantastic and I felt well and truly pampered.
I had read previous reviews regarding this hotel and I must admit I was a little sceptical about going but I needn't have worried - the service here was one of the best we've ever had in a hotel. One of the reviews highlighted that the toiletries weren't very impressive - they are not household names such as Moulton Brown for example, as they are actually made exclusively for the hotel!!
If you want a truly amazing and relaxing break in Bath, where nothing is too much trouble, you should book here - I can't wait to go again.
