We stayed in this hotel for two nights in March 2008 on a dinner bed and breakfast package. The hotel is quite old but our room had a very pleasant outlook over the local park. The room was quite large, clean and very comfortable and fitted out nicely to coincide with the hotel's theme.
The food at breakfast and dinner was very good. We found the hotel staff to be pleasant, knowledgeable and very helpful. It is located quite conveniently to the historic town of Colchester and while Colchester is worth seeing, we believe that staying outside the town was a good decision.
This is a hotel which we would have no hesitation in recommending.

“Quiky ecellence”

Excellent food, with a real attention to service. We stayed while they were also catering for a wedding but at no stage were we neglected. At every turn the staff were attentive, cheerful, and helpfull.

The room, Yquem, was more bordello than 17th century coaching inn, but all the more memorable for it.

A recommendation if you are looing for comfortable fun.

We arrived by bicycle - rather tired - and were immediately made welcome with a cup of tea and a safe place to store bikes. We stayed in the Yquem room which was absolutely beautiful (but a bit hot - must be all that excercise). Towels a bit nylony - but really could not fault anything else.

We had booked a table and seemed to have a choice of either restaurant - we sat in comfy bar one. The food was perfect and staff even seemed to understand when we asked for a break between courses.
We found all staff very helpful and would definitely go back - although I must admit - if it hadn't been on special offer I doubt if I would have paid the full price for the room originally. We thought food merited the price - esp. compared to London - but by no means every-day fare unless money no object.

The room was nice, and £165. It didn't have a mini bar and the TV was only tuned to about 2 and a half channels.

Dinner was £100 for 2 courses and wine. We wanted to sit in the restaurant but were forced by staff to sit in the pub dining area as the restaurant was empty. We were rushed into ordering and then hurried to our table. The starters were very cold out of the fridge, the spinach in my main was gritty and unwashed. Service was slow and inexperienced.

Breakfast was in the same bar dining area, again, slow and inexperienced service.

Wouldn't go back.
