I am now a Manager in the Hotel industry but had the misfortune to stay in the Guildford Hotel for 2 nights in September. The stay was meant to be a two week one but I convinced my company to move me to another hotel.
I arrived at the hotel after a six hour drive at 9pm to be told there was no car park but I could take my car to the paying car park in the Civic Centre. Hardly ideal for a lone female traveller when it is dark.
I asked what time I could get food until to be told there were no dining facilities but that I might be able to get room service.
I asked for help with my bags and was told that there was no porter. My room was 2 floors up and there was no lift.
Upon entering my room I rang down and ordered a Chicken Korma from the room service menu. I decided to have a shower while I waited. The bathroom was filthy. The ceiling looked as though somebody had actually smeared mud all over it. I didn't spend long in the shower.
Half an hour after ordering my food my phone rang - it was reception advising they had no chicken korma and did I want something else...? I opted for a bowl of soup as it was now nearing 10pm. This took 25 minutes to arrive but was acceptable (if outrageously priced)
Things didn't get much better during my stay. The website quotes no deliveries before 9am. Maybe they don't but someone on their road certainly does. I was woken up at 6am by the noise of a truck engine running below my room. This carried on for over half an hour so I got up.
When I went to the window to look out onto the picturesque concrete building across the road I became aware that the tiles on the window ledge were loose and all came off. I was also fairly concerned that the sliding window which ran the full length of the room didn't have a limiter stopping it beling opened more than a few inches. The window opened at least 3 feet, if I had had a child with me this would have been terrifying.
There seemed little point in complaining as the staff's grasp of English just didn't stretch to anything more than answering the phone and directing me to a paying car park. There was no sign of anyone in authority to speak to.
A sentence on the official hotel website is frankly laughable.
'We believe we offer a superior service to other hotels in Guildford' They are deluding themselves.
Avoid at all costs.
