“Terrible and overpriced”

We have just returnrd from a one night stay at this hotel, and were very disappointed.
As busy people, who don't get away much, i booked this hotel, as a 'treat' for us, and at £200 for a luxuxry suite, you'd expect something pretty special.
What we actually got, was a hotel in dire need of a complete overhaul. Our room was light and airy, but can't have been decorated in the last 10 years.
There was peeling paint work on all the window ledges, and the bath pannel. Two lights were broken, infact one of the lights by the bathroom mirror, was practically smashed up and glued back together. The curtains were ripped, there were scuff marks through-out not just our room, but the whole hotel. There was a hole in one of the walls, and a huge damp patch above the television. Definatly NOT a luxury suite, or a luxury hotel.
I expressed my concerns to the receptionist, who showed me another room. This was dark and faced the allyway at the back. there was an extension cable running accross the middle of the room, for the television, and the bathroon smelt of urine. needless to say we didn't swap rooms.
To add to all of this, the bar wasn't open for the duration of our stay, and within the £200 no breakfast is included, and you have to pay to park your car in one of the towns central car parks. When we checked out i did bring all our points to the receptioniists attention again, who informed me that she didn't realise the state of the room, as she only works reception. I would suggest that the people selling and allocating the rooms took a bit more of an interest in their condition. We did receive a reduction on our room, but i will be pursuiing this further with the manager. This hotel is in an unacceptable condition for people to be paying to stay in.

A beautiful (and rabbit warren-like) coaching inn with parts dating from the 13th century, the Angel is bang dead centre for Guildford's shopping district and an easy (less than 5 min) walk to the city's best restaurants. The decor is authentic-ish and the parts which don't fit in are at least pleasantly functional, such as the modern lift. Service is excellent, if typically unsmilingly British, and the gin and tonics will tranquilise your elephant. Breakfast in what appears to be an old crypt is an interesting mood-setter for the day. Our suite was airy and light and did a good job shutting out noises from below. However, the hotel is situated on a pedestrianised street with a slope one could ski down. Finding a place to park long enough to disgorge the luggage is extremely difficult and cobbled streets compound the access problem. Elderly people, and those with mobility challenges, should ensure they have considerable help arranged on arrival and departure. Wheelchair users, unless of the gym-toned, acrobatic variety, will likely find the many steps, bumps and narrow passages a nightmare.

The building is full of character but the prices are too high for very amateurish service, tired decor in places and a noisy location. I am baffled why the Angel makes it into the Small Luxury Hotel group. It's all perfectly nice but they are charging top-end prices for good pub type accomodation.
If you have to stay in Guildford(as we did) you could certainly do a lot worse but I wouldn't head back in a hurry.

I have stayed here a few times with work and have never been terribly impressed. It is a beautiful historic building and it is really well located in the centre of guildford. However I think the rooms are a bit scruffy, there is mould and black marks in the bathroom. The windows and curtains are not the cleanest and the carpets are a bit dubious. Also the food is pretty rubbish. All of this would be fair enough if you were staying in a room above a pub but you are paying a premium price for a 'luxury' hotel!

“so NOT a small luxury hotel of the world”

It was our anniversary - I wanted it to be special. It wasn't - our very over priced room looked over the high street - .. a police car sat outside with blue lights flashing until after midnight .. and it was SO noisy.
The room was tired and scruffy - paint peeling off the edge of the bath panels, uneven tiles on the walls, uneven floor surfaces,. The sofa in our so called luxury suite sat on top of the plugs and stopped the table lights from working.
I'd booked as a surprise for my partner and unfortunately it turned out to be not a good surprise.

And add to that the most comical "Lurch"-like character at the bar who took our order without a word and then kept patrolling back and forth through the bar area to keep an eye on us (we are in our 40s and civilised!!) - and never a civil word...

We did have a good time - but it was in spite of the hotel and certainly not bcause of it. I put the fun down to our sense of humour - we needed it!
My advice - find somewhere else!!
