The only place to stay on a Monday night in Godalming was the Inn on the Lake - in fact, this was the only hotel available as a last minute booking - maybe the non-negotiable £99 room rate was the reason.
Very nice downstairs bar/restaurant interior. Comfy chairs, subtle lighting, generally a welcoming atmosphere. How the hotel functioned was clearly explained by a very pleasant manager(?).
Went to my bedroom, again generally comfy but wardrobe door was hanging precariously only by the bottom hinge, rather dangerously for anyone not paying attention.. As no fallen screws were nearby, this must have been knowingly left. Previous manager quickly attended to its repair while I enjoyed a complimentary beer in the bar.
Food in the restaurant excellent.
OK - the downside stuff. my room (no 16) was at the back - I was told it was quiet but in fact there was a very loud extractor immediately behind the bedhead wall. Very annoying. Two huge cobwebs hung from the ceiling but most irritating was a shower door that simply refused to close. Using the loo in the middle of the night, I bumped into it. Quite painful! Additionally part of the shower casing was hanging loose from the wall. I can't believe that the room had been left with such obvious faults for a guest to discover. I was also awoken at 2am by chatter/tv/doors slamming (and I mean slamming) and footsteps all echoing very loudly through the room - are the staff quarters above or beside room 16??!! Couldn't get to sleep again 'til 4am. The "free" Breakfast was simple, perfectly acceptable but with an emphasis on the packaged product as opposed to fresh. My hunch is that by calling it free, it releases the hotel from having to provide anything more substantial. And where was the milk? I couldn't find it.
I left by placing my fob on the bar- but no one to pass on my comments to. Shame.
I would definitely eat at the Inn again, but to stay? Not so sure!
