“Poor management”

Mandolay Hotel

20 Jun 2008

We booked three particular rooms at the Mandolay way back in January for our daughter's wedding (in May). The rooms were specially chosen as they were the best rooms in the hotel and close together with a little landing, which was perfect for the make up artist etc. On the eve of the wedding the hotel management allowed the brides room to be given to another party who had decided to extend his stay. This meant that our party was split - we were given two rooms on one landing over the other side of the hotel and only one of the rooms we had originally booked. We were VERY disappointed as we had made these plans well in advance and had the numbers of the particular rooms in writing. This was a special occasion for us and we only got a very defensive cursory apology (eventually after 2 emails and 2 unaswered 'phone calls) from the manager.

We had also arranged for a 9.30 breakfast for 27 people in a side room on the morning after the wedding. Management appeared to have neglected to tell the staff this as they were clearing away when we all arrived and there was only a tiny bit of food on offer. The kitchen staff were very helpful and did what they could under the circumstances but it did mean that we had to wait whilst breakfast was cooked and the buffet table was re filled. The manager explained that breakfast usually finishes at 9.30 am which can only mean that he had forgotten to alert the staff to the fact that a side room had been booked (and was full of wedding bouquets) for breakfast for 27 people.

We had requested a bucket of ice and 2 champagne glasses to be put in the newly weds room. These items were put in our (parents of the bride) room by mistake. To rectify this, our room key and the newly wed's key was handed over to one of the guests who went into both of our rooms without permission from us. We did know this person but could reception be sure of this? We have NEVER experienced this before - bad practice?

“Nice family room”

Mandolay Hotel

17 Jun 2008

Stayed in a family room in the coach house with 2 single beds and a double, perfectly OK room with clean bathroom and good shower. No view except of other buildings but wouldn't expect one in a town centre room.
Stayed on a Saturday night and weren't disturbed by the bar, probably because we were in the coachhouse but it didn't look particularly lively at 10.30pm when we got back, although couldn't get a parking space at this time, had to park in a council carpark 5 minutes walk away.
Breakfast was good, apparently food in the restaurant was slow but we didn't have any so can't comment.

Was worried when I read the reviews on here but it was fine.

We stayed at the hotel after a Wedding, along with a number of other guests. What we weren't told was that there was a bar which is open until 2am! We thought our room (No 42) in the lower ground level would be far enough away from the noise....how wrong we were! We had decided to not go the bar as it had been a very long day and just wanted some sleep. Again, how wrong we were! Even with the window shut all we could hear was loud music, people talking and chairs scratching across the floor. We rang up and complained...but not by the usual method of dialing an extension, no, we had to externally ring the hotel number, and press 1 for reception and booking! A great system, especially if you are in an emergency! Above us (room 5) a few guests were up talking and laughing and you could hear everything! The manager claims he couldn't hear anything though! But lying in bed, you could hear everything. What he needs to do is spend a night in that room and have someone run up and down the stairs that runs above the bathroom...it sounds like a bunch of elephants are coming into the bathroom. After complaining twice on the phone, and once at reception, we walked out at 3.30 and got a cab back home. The noise level was so bad that sleep was impossible, so we decided that wasting money on an overly expensive room and getting no sleep wasn't worth it. The guy on reception didn't seem to bothered once we walked out, he just locked the door behind us!
We have since complained, and asked for a refund, but this has been ignored. PLEASE DON'T STAY HERE, ITS NOT WORTH IT!

“Great experience”

Mandolay Hotel

9 Mar 2008

I stayed at this hotel for one night while I was Guildford to see some old friends. Guildford is a lovely town and the hotel is right in the centre. The main high street is at 2 minutes walk. The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was quite nice too. Although the price was a bit high but I believe Guildford is expensive anyway.

“A Complete Disapointment”

Mandolay Hotel

21 Dec 2007

My first trip to the UK on business and I was referred to hotel by work colleague, didn't realize he disliked me. The hotel was rated as three star but even by lax North American standards it would have trouble with one. The first room I was given I jokingly referred to as the dungeon was sub ground level and the view from my window was the underside of parked cars. It also had a very strong basement-musty smell. My second room was on the second floor right above the "disco" and was the size of a large bathroom. One double bed, 13" TV small desk and bathroom with small shower stall. Both weekends and one weeknight the noise was unbearable until past 02:00. The furniture was below standard as was the service and overall experience. This would have been an acceptable room for $75.00 instead of $225.00 per night. The only redeeming quality was its close proximity to High Street and the train station.
