“Nasty modern motel concept leaves bad taste”

Stayed here last weekend... Must concur with our friend from Vancouver below on all his points made. This is one of the worst places ever. From check-in to departure it was poor. Noisy, spring sticking through beds, nothing nearby, door slamming and a bizarre approach to guest relations (ie. fill in a card when you leave). Staff were young, inexperienced and poorly managed. No buzz or sparkle to anything. This is a hotel concept designed by banks/profiteers that bears no relation to customer demands/expectations.

It could have been acceptable (perhaps) if we had paid the £10 price mentioned in a review below but we paid £60* excluding breakfast - for which you can get a very good B&B or discounted rooms in a proper 4-star hotel nearby.

If this is representative of Travelodge offerings (ie. overpriced backpacking hostel) then you would get a more restful night sleeping in your car!

PS> Keep away from the breakfast - the eggs are from a powder source and goodness only knows what they put in the sausages. Hence the bad taste...

(BTW it's worth complaining as I got £30 back without a fight)

I did not experience any major problems here. I paid £26 for my room and knew what to expect from a Travelodge. Basic, budget accomodation.
The room was clean. I asked for one away from the road so it was quiet and i did not experience any noisy guests or banging doors. I did experience problems with the tv picture as the previous reviewer reports
Breakfast was ok but as there is nowhere else near it was my only option.
I asked for extra towels for evening and morning showers and one to use as bathmat. No problem. Reception staff helpful and friendly.
For £26 i had no complaints. If i want a better hotel i stay at the Holiday Inn, Guildford.

“Worst... modern... hotel... ever”

Travelodge Guildford

Let's face it, most hotels in Guildford suck; there just isn't a decent selection. But when I had to make another business trip to Guildford and all the other hotels were full, I thought I should try out the Travelodge. It's only 1 year old, and looked just fine from the website.

But oh my God, what an awful place to stay.

NO SOAP OR SHAMPOO: Maybe it's a thing in British budget hotels, but at least in North American budget hotels, they give you soap and shampoo. The Travelodge website doesn't mention this (and other surprises), and since the nearest store is at least a 30 minute walk away, you're stuck with buying some pretty lame body gel in the lobby vending machine. At least they give you...

A SINGLE TOWEL: No face cloth, no hand towel, nothing to put on the floor. A single towel. Want to have a shower after your travels and then have another the next morning? You're going to have to use the same damp towel. Hope you don't get a cold, because there's...

NO KLEENEX: I mean, come on. Sigh. I guess I should be grateful that they supply the cheap toilet paper they do.

NO AIR CONDITIONING: What new, large hotel doesn't have air conditioning these days? Apparently, Travelodge. Geez, even old cheap hotels and motels in North America have air conditioning. I could understand if the hotel was old or small, but it's big and new. So if it's hot like it was when I was there, you have to leave your window open, which would suck enough, but then the hotel is...

RIGHT BESIDE THE RAILROAD: Remember that scene in The Blues Brothers movie where they're in John Belushi's apartment and the subway goes by the open window constantly? Same thing here. It goes by so often you'll lose count. And since the window doesn't close properly, even the earplugs I brought didn't help enough. But that's not the only thing that's...

LOUD, LOUD, LOUD: The hotel features big heavy doors that BOOM when they close. I mean really, really loud, and you can even hear the floors above and below you for this. And since you'll have drunk twentysomethings coming up from the bar until 2:00 am and having their doors BOOM all through the night, you'll never really get to sleep. Even if you do manage some sleep (I got 2 hours), housekeeping will wake you up in the morning with the constant door openings and closings, which may be a blessing in disguise, because there's...

NO CLOCK OR WAKE-UP SERVICE: Hope you brought a clock or watch with an alarm on it, because you won't know the time or when to wake up at the Travelodge without it. Would it have really increased the hotel chains' costs to have a wake-up service in the new phone system? It's worse actually; you can't even call down to the front desk from the phone, perhaps if you wanted to complain about the...

AWFUL TV RECEPTION: You get six channels on the tiny TV, but all but BBC1 and BBC2 have constant digital pixelation-and-breakup. The picture freezes and the sound cuts out every 5-15 seconds. It wouldn't have been a total disaster if there hadn't been...

NO BROADBAND INTERNET: Although they apparently allow dial-up access to your own provider for a fee, I don't have a dial-up account. Sure they're a budget hotel, but why not MAKE SOME MONEY by charging for broadband use?

So you're stuck in a hotel that isn't near anything else in Guildford, with almost no TV, no internet for many (most?), and you can't sleep. I will never come back.

Stayed here for 1 night. Directions to hotel provided by Travelodge were very poor. Kept awake by slamming door to reception and the traffic outside. Only one very grubby and worn bath towel provided. Breakfast also poor. Tasteless food. Appreciate that this is a budget hotel although £60 plus breakfast puts in on a par with a good b&b. Reception staff friendly and helpful though.

“Simply awful!”

Travelodge Guildford

What an awful place this was! The doors are of the heavy slam-door variety and every morning (stayed for 4 days), the cleaners would go through each room, regardless of whether it had been inhabited or not, quickly checking and banging the door behind them. As each floor had about 25 rooms? this meant one banging door after another at 8 a.m. Also, for a relatively new Travelodge, I can't understand how the phones and pay per view TV do not work even after over a year.
