“Welcoming and comfortable”

Two colleagues and I stayed at the Asperion for four nights and we have already booked another stay next February to ensure rooms there. We had an extremely comfortable stay, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, all of whom were lovely.

The rooms were excellent, breakfast was delicious and there was a lovely atmosphere all round. And the green credentials are to be commended. We will definitely stay again.

Luxurious and beautiful perched on the hills overlooking Guildford. The hotel provided an excellent base for a wedding group to gather from around Europe. Blissfully furnished rooms with everything you could want. Delicious all round. A real treat. Grow some more in other places please!

Had one night left in England, before we had to return home after a hectic and enjoyable vacation, and choose this hotel, base on some of the info on the web site, and a reccomendation from friends that run a B and B here in Vermont. We found a warm and helpful greeting at the door, and a real simple check-in. The hotel has an eclectic decor, and is really clean. Our room, the Asperion Suite, had plenty of room for the three of us, (travelled with the 15 year old) and our bed was amazingly comfortable. The shower/bathroom was large and had plenty of hot water, and the all of the facilities that we found, seemed to be designed with a minnimum of environmental impact. Natural, local grown, and/or organic food and items were used throughout. We had the opportunity to speak with the Director at breakfast, and he confirmed that the concept of "green" is what they are going for, and if you ask us, it's working. Lot's of natural light, and a very open feeling in the breakfast area, and we couldn't have asked for a better place for our last night. We got a good reccomendation for dinner, and breakfast in the hotel was superb. Guildford is about 45 minutes from Gatwick, where we flew out of, and the whole thing just worked for us.

“Clean, but room was very small”

Just had a short business trip to Guildford and, seeing the glowing reviews on this site, decided to try the Asperion this time.

Positives:
The place is spotlessly clean throughout, it is in a good location for town and the university, there was a handy small fridge in the room (as well as some free bottled water and chocolate), they offer free internet access (although I was not able to take up this offer), the breakfasts are good and the staff were never anything less than polite. They also had taken the nice touch of tweaking the springs on the bedroom doors so they close gently and quietly.

Negatives:
I had a single room and it was *very* small, as in ‘like a cupboard’ small. Neatly laid out, with a little WC behind a sliding door, but it still very claustrophobic. With the bathroom door closed it was only 5’ 11” from wall to wall, (I know because I’m 5’10”!).
This squeezing-in of as any rooms as possible is a perennial problem in British B&Bs, but I really hate this kind of thing and felt that given the 4-star rating the AA gave it, this hotel would be different. The double rooms are probably more generous with space, (perhaps explaining why this has not been mentioned as an issue by other reviewers, if they were all in doubles) so for single travellers I’d advise looking to see if you can afford a double – just for the extra space.

Associated with this problem of space was the lack of a wardrobe or a chest of drawers. There was just a very short, rather awkwardly-placed bar and three coathangers. This is a shame, as most B&Bs at least give you the option to unpack your clothes a bit. I had to live out of my case.

Returning to some positives:
The little LCD TV had the five terrestrial channels plus Sky News & Sky Sports 1. A good bonus.

One other tip I would give to future visitors is to try to get a room at the rear or at the side of the hotel, as they over-illuminate the front garden with spotlights after dark and this required me to shut the blinds tightly to lock out the beam.

Overall, a well-maintained and modern little hotel that would rate as excellent if it were not for the room being the smallest I have ever stayed in. That pulled down the marks for me since £65 a night buys more space than this in many comparable hotels I’ve stayed at.

“Wonderful Staff”

The Asperion was my final couple of nights away on a 2 week round the world business trip. Had seen previous reviews and wanted to ensure a good end to my trip. Wasn't disappointed with the room and certainly not with the team running the place. They couldn't do enough to ensure you were looked after, even lending me their own travel plug so I could recharge my phone before the long trip home. Also nice touches with the complimentary water and internet connection that so many places charge through the roof for. Would definitely stay again.
