If you want to get away from it all and yet not be too far from London, Lockhurst Hatch farm is a fine place to spend some time.
You'll need a car and good map-reading skills because even though it's just a few miles from Guildford, it's down a dirt track which although signposted well enough, is tricky to locate in the first place.
The farm dates back to the 15th century and the room and facilities are great. There's a four poster bed, tea and coffee, a nice bathroom and great views out of every window. Small issues which didn't spoil the visit were the lack of a shower in the bath and the lack of a TV in the bedroom. There is a TV downstairs that is yours exclusively to use but watching the news in bed wasn't an option! Then again, you dont tend to spend a lot of time inside anyway.
The hosts were great, helping with directions into nearby Shere, with all its stunning little lanes, quaint shops and fine pubs. Make sure you book Kingham's restaurant in advance, a very impressive eatery which wouldnt be out of place in Mayfair.
Breakfast at the farm was great and plentiful and the walk up to see the horses was also magical, even if the weather wasnt perfect.
I'll certainly be going back to the farm - was fabulous getting some R&R without having to drive for hours to get there.
