Spent two nights with friend at Malmaison. Fantastic location next to Gateshead Millennium Bridge with plenty of parking in the multi-storey behind. Room excellent with two tv's, a sofa and enough unguents in bathroom to moisturise an elephant (never actually tried though...), but with views of aforesaid carpark.

Food in restaurant excellent and service very good at all times. Staff very happy to accommodate need for a fast meal to get to event.

Only gripe was that the room was very warm. Corridors were very hot and the room airconditioning only allowed the temp to be turned down to 16 c, which to me, brought up before central heating wearing liberty vests, is just too warm for a bedroom. The windows only opened an inch, presumably to prevent guests throwing themselves into the street below, and the heavy curtains also made it difficult to use the windows to cool the room.

Great location, very stylish but not sure about the black walls, carpets and furniture. Very gloomy.

Very trendy bar and restaurant fully of "media types" but very pleasant and good TV;s, great shower and really comfy bed. Have stayed here are few times over the years and the hotel is showing signs of wear and tear and is probably due an upgrade.

Still ok but fading

I have stayed in other hotels in the Malmaison chain and have always enjoyed my stay but I was completely underwhelmed by the Newcastle Hotel. The only thing I can really say in its favour is that it has a great location and the staff are polite and friendly

The decor looked tired - the dark fittings of the Malmaison chain work well in some buildings. This wasn't one of them. The endless miles of deep purple corridors were oppressive and just a little bit scary - particularly for a woman staying on her own. My room was small and dark. The furniture was trendy in the usual malmaison way, but was chipped. The bed was very comfortable though a good nights sleep wasn't possible becaus the room was was over heated and the airconditioning didn't work. The iron was very poor. The hairdryer was very poor and weak. The "high speed internet connection" actually ran at 256k consistently throughout my stay - which made working slow and irksome. Weird one cup coffee filer devices were awkward to use and would either burst in the cup leaving you with a mouthful of grinds or burn your hands as you lifted them out to spill all over the floor (whatever happened to the individual cafetieres Malmaison???) The room was noisy - but the TV had a fixed volume I'd defy a German Shepherd to hear. When my breakfast came in the famous malmaison basket the next day I had no milk and no croissant - just a bowl of fruit segments a packet of cornflakes (great with no milk!) some orange juice and some mini preserves - not a great deal for £11.50. I rang down and was brought up one croissant and a glass of milk. The milk was off and floated on my coffee. Disgusting. When I went to check out they tried to charge me extra for this.

All in all this was a VERY disappointing stay and I can't say I will be going back to a Mal hotel again. Maybe its the lack of competition in newcastle, or maybe malmaison are sitting back on their laurels. This hotel is not operating like a four star. Try the Grey Street Hotel of Jesmond Dene if you want decent quality in this style and price range.

Oh and can I just say - and I can't remember this happening in the other places in the chain - having the lift announcements in french is irritating and pretentious.

“Nice place but a little spendy”

Malmaison Newcastle

14 Apr 2008

Just to echo the other reviews: room was very plush and the staff were extra friendly and helpful. I was in room 221 which is directly over the bar area and I couldn't hear any noise at all despite going to bed early.

The quayside area is a great place to base oneself with the museum across the river and lots of restaurants and pubs within walking distance. The car park is across the street and is very inexpensive.

My only complaint was breakfast on Saturday morning. I arrived at 930am and the breakfast room was chaotic. I don't know if they were having a bad day or someone called in sick but we just stuck to the continental breakfast as we noticed other diner sending their hot meals back for reasons unknown. We never got our toast nor a refill of coffee but they forgot to ask our room number so we were not charged (and at £12 each for continental breakfast this adds up). And if this was all very minor. Sunday's breakfast was smooth and very good.

The bar is very nice to relax with good views. Not too sure why they have 'Fashion TV' on a screen over the river views but I guess its all part of a WAG kind of vibe they are trying to put across. Cocktails are £9 each, a draft beer is £3.50 but its table service and all very slick.
