I booked into Jurys Inn knowing it is a bog standard hotel, although the room cost £139 without breakfast on a weekday! So, given the price, I had some expectations!
Check-in experience was poor. I had booked two single rooms, and the one in my name they could find, but the receptionist claimed I hadn't booked two rooms, despite the fact that I had a computer generated booking form indicating that I had booked another room. After some time with the receptionist saying that I hadn't booked two rooms, and with him typing names into the computer, he checked with the manager. After that, he found the booking for my friend. To be frank, even if I *had* messed up the booking, after a long journey, being told that you haven't a room isn't what you need, and the receptionist wasn't even diplomatic enough to pretend that it was his error, and not ours!
I was given a room for a disabled person, although I am not disabled, and I only mention this because I thought other Trip Advisor members might be interested. The room seemed to be well equipped with bars for baths, a shallow bath, special toilets, etc. I can't say for sure that the room would be good for someone in a wheelchair, but it seemed to me that it would be.
The room was, however, absolutely freezing, and despite playing about with the air conditioning and heating, it remained freezing for my entire stay. My friend's room, on the other hand, was gigantic compared to mine, but it was also cold. There are signs in the rooms about Jurys Inn being eco friendly, and a very annoying system where cards have to be put into slots in order to turn the lights on, etc. However, despite this, there is no excuse for a hotel room, or in this case two hotel rooms, being cold.
The rooms were both basic, clean, with a satisfactory bed, tv and had tea and coffee making facilities. There is no room service, but you can go to the restaurant/bar and bring food/drink up to the room, which was okay, but not really acceptable for the price.
Breakfast was £10 extra - and was not particularly good value, as the standard of produce was very basic. Indeed, the sausage was so plastic that it actually bounced on my friend's plate when he tried to cut into it! Whilst eating breakfast, I was also amazed to be asked by one of the staff to move to the lobby area because he needed to hoover! Considering we'd paid £10 each, I thought this was very poor customer service.
We spoke to the same receptionist on check out as we did at check in. I asked for a taxi to the Mailbox, and was told that it was so close we should walk. When I pointed out that we had lots of luggage with us, he told us to go and get a taxi in the street. If Jurys Inn was my hotel, I would be sending the receptionists on customer relations training courses because I have had better receptions in B&Bs.
In all, the rooms are clean and cold, and the food is very basic and overpriced. If I had paid half the price for the rooms I would not complain, but for £139 I expect better service and a warm room.....
