I have stayed in some truly exceptional hotels in my life - and this isn't one of them. It's just plain 'very good'.
The first time I looked at the hotel (a good 9 months before I stayed) it was a fairly shabby affair; and the rooms I was shown looked like any other long-in-the-tooth trying-to-be-posh-but-not-hitting-the-mark hotel room that can be found the length and breadth of Britain. And the staff were indifferent and pretty unhelpful.
I am pleased to report that since it has been taken over, things are looking up. The staff were delightful without exception and very helpful. The rooms were better (but still need redecorating in a more modern style) and the beds had obviously had a big overhaul and were terrfically comfortable.
The food was also excellent and there is a wonderful spa and swimming pool area.
However, there is just something about the place that doesn't quite work for me. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the decor. Maybe it's the hopelessly muddled layout. Maybe it's the lack of air conditioning. I don't know but nice as it was I wouldn't make a huge effort to stay there again.
