I love history and architecture and this unique park marries the two.
At least 40 or 50 original buildings ranging from the 1300's to the early 19th century have been relocated in all their authenticity to a huge park-like setting. Most have period furniture and are set up as if the original occupants still reside here. The 14th century marketplace and 15th century two story farmhouse- Bayleaf- are highlights (don't miss the open roof truss- amazing).
Multiple residences from the same time period show the dichotomy of living arrangements between the affluent and working classes. Historic interpreters are present at each building to give demonstrations (the mill demo was great) and enthusiastically answer questions.
There were several small displays centering on how these period buildings were engineered. Who knew lead pipe construction could be so interesting? There is also a large display focused on everything you would ever need to know about brick drying. Innovative displays make these subjects engaging.
There is a very similar attraction in Co. Clare, Ireland called Bunratty Folk Park, also worth a visit if you enjoy historic buildings in a group setting.
Close by is the Royal Oak Inn, a gastro-pub and inn, in the very posh village of East Lavant. This is one of my favorites in the area- great atmosphere, wine list & food. Well worth the side trip.
