“Suffolk House Hotel - Good Value for Money”

Suffolk House

12 May 2008

We found the Suffolk House Hotel good value for money. The accommodation isn't posh, but perfectly adequate and clean, and the breakfasts were good. The owner was helpful, and not at all surly (as various other reviews have suggested). The location is brilliant, being so close to the city centre. If you want a lot of luxury it's not the place for you, but if you just want somewhere clean to sleep, shower and have breakfast before going out for most of the day, it is excellent value. (Of course, there is TV in the rooms if you want to stay in at any time and there is also a small garden.)
Parking in a nearby car park is not a problem, as it is free from 5 pm overnight and you can buy a ticket any time after 5pm to start at 9 am the following morning if you are not intending to go out until later in the day.
We'd certainly consider going back.

We stayed here for one night. We got a special out of season rate. The hotel looks as though it needs updating but didn't have that old musty smell. I was surprised how clean it was. The bed was very comfortable and the room was huge!
I was pleased by the inclusion of a bottled water in the room in addition to the usual tea and biscuits.
The hotel is in the Georgian heart of Chichester. It's very quiet and peaceful location.

“Not run of the mill..”

Suffolk House

I am about to book to stay again, in spite of some of my experiences last time! The reason? - it's different, and pretty reasonably priced given it's location. I had to move rooms three times before we got it right - first time I was put in an already occupied room, second, the hot water didn't come through, third time I was given a huge room with four-poster and sofa at no extra cost ! There is certainly an element of Fawlty Towers in there .... The owner is very British, perhaps a little eccentric but not in an unpleasant way. The place has lots of character.... No concessions to modern trends - just feels like an old family home that's getting a bit tired. It was clean. Breakfast was excellent. Off street parking. And you can pop out, shop, take it back to your room, shop some more ... couldn't be better situated. I found the whole thing rather endearing and am looking forward to going back.

Cannot believe the owner of this hotel is still in business. Diabolical customer service. The hotel has a vague charm and granted the toilet is clean, but really, when do we get so desperate as to accept this as any kind of 'quality' - that's the least you should expect.

The location is great. But if you ask the owner for advice on parking, directions, anything that requires him to remove the rod from his backside, then you'll be gravely disappointed and at risk of ruining your otherwise pleasant stay in Chichester.

Suffolk House was literally the only accommodation available when I booked my 3-night stay in late June. Chichester was full to the brim because of a big race nearby. So I was apprehensive: why were all other hotels and inns booked, but not Suffolk House? I was very pleasantly surprised. I had a single room, which was tiny, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and quite adequate. Breakfast was excellent. No luxury here, and the gentleman who owns and operates it will not win any prizes for warmth and charm (his wife handles the bookings, but I did not meet her during my stay), but the location is excellent, a short walk from the main shopping streets and from the Festival Theatre. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Chichester.
