“slightly less than ok”

Haley's Hotel and Restaurant

9 Feb 2008

room was ok but a little tired. food was ok. the problem was my room was above the restaurant and kitchen and heard everything up until midnight and then from 6am - talking, banging etc. They also tried to charge me £8 for an orange and lemonade which never turned up with my room service - I am still trying to get this deleted from my bill but can not get hold of the hotel by phone.

This is a really nice place to stay - the room we had was no.2., it was very spacious, cosy and the bed was so comfortable.
We arrived late and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The only meal we had was breakfast and that was lovely.

But and these are important points
The hotel is very much a business persons place in the week and early morning noise was terrible from about 6 onwards with doors slamming and people rushing around with no regards for others. The hoovering started at around7.15. Workmen wre hammering at 7.30 and it spoilt the stay.
Needs some paint too.
But I did like the place and believe food is lovely - the menu looked great.
Leeds isn't blessed with great places to saty in the suburbs and this hotel in Headingly is nice.
I would stay again but would complain about early morning noise in advance.

When I read some of the reviews I wonder if we were staying at the same place. Excellent value at £80/night including a great cooked breakfast. Room (No. 5) was perfectly adequate for the price, and quieter perhaps than one over the front door or bar. Our friends were disturbed on the Saturday night by a party who did not leave at their anticipated time of 11pm and made a row until my friend made a fuss at 12.15 or so. To be fair, the hotel voluntarily gave him a room rate discount to compensate for his trouble. We never had any such problem and were perfectly comfortable and slept like logs. Took dinner in the hotel one night. Excellently cooked. Touch more expensive than maybe some restaurants, but the advantage was we could have some wine and not have to drive home.

Would we go back - definitely. OK so maybe it needs some paint refreshing here and there but overall I thought it was fine and thoroughly enjoyed the country house weekend atmosphere. Staff very friendly and helpful.
You could do worse.

I turned up on Saturday evening without a booking, and the receptionists were so welcoming; they offered an overnight room at a reasonable price, and the room, food, and service was faultless; they were very attentive without being intrusive. The room has good facilities, including a full size iron and ironing board, and hairdryer; the dinner and breakfast was very good, and it all felt like good old fashioned (in the best sense of the word) service. Highly recommended for a short stay. The hotel is a lovely old Victorian house in a very central part of Headingley.

“One of the best small hotels I've stayed in”

My trip was for business, so I was solo. I'm in no way connected to this hotel - if the review below sounds too-glowing its because I find staying in the big-chains fairly grim and when I find a really nice local hotel I think its a reason to rejoice !

I have stayed in Leeds quite a few times in city centre hotels, but Haley's out performs them all. A beautiful period building. Rooms to a very high standard. FREE wifi - no more of those annoying "charges per minute".

I didn't eat in the restaurant, but it smelt good and is a well thought-out simple classic-british set of options that promises high standards because they aren't trying to over-stretch themselves. Basically they've been watching Gordon Ramsey and rather than trying to deliver "lobster thermador", they stick to rib-eye steak, fish & chips etc.. and if breakfast is anything to go by they will be done to a high standard.

A litmus test is always breakfast. At Haley's its one of the best I've had. Everything cooked to order, its not one of those dreadful limp-hot-buffets you get it large hotels. I tried the eggs benedict and the full-english, both were excellent.

Basically if you are staying in Leeds, don't bother with the city centre. Just take a trip of a few miles up to Headingley and stay some where cosy and classy - Excellent for a family or couple and gives easy access to bot the city and the Dales. I would book my family in anytime, and I'll definately stay there again.
