This was not shabby-chic. This was shabby.
My huisband and I went for one night at this hotel with a Travel Zoo voucher so we did not pay the full price but we would not have been pleased at any price.
It began with the search for the car park (valet was advertised but NOT forthcoming). While I waited for my husband I had a cup of coffee in the bar. Reasonably coffee with stale unedible shortbread biscuits!
We were then taken up stairs (no lift, and we had not been advised of this), through what seemed like endless corriders with chipped and dirty paint and signs of water damage from previous leaks.
The small room was dark, dingy with an uunclean carpet. that I refused to allow in contact with my feet. The bed appeared clean except for a throw that should have been a long time ago.
The second we were offered was similar -so we left.
To be fair, by this time the man who had carried our bags, seemingly did everything, and turned outo be the under manager now rushed to offer us ' the best room in the hotel'. Then came the offer of the free bottle of wine.
We still left!
Why? I asked had they offered two such awful rooms and only now, after so much uunpleasantless found something suitable?
Why, I ask, when a hotel is so obviously undersubscribed do they almost always try to get rid of the shabbiest rooms in the dreariest part of the hotel? And why is Travel Zoo not checking more thoroughly? Why are they promising upgrades 'if available' which, in my experience, never are made available. The lame excuses are obbviously very practiced. We have had several .bargain breaks. through Travel Zoo but they are rarely worth more than we paid for them.
Are there any at this hotel? Are any of them cleaner than the one offered to us?

With regard to the issue you have raised relating to no lift being available and "endless corridors", we would advise that The Lygon Arms is a listed building and has been welcoming travellers since the 16th century with a diversity of rooms which are all individually furnished in a traditional country house style.
I assure you that the points you have raised will be treated very seriously as they are not the levels of service we strive to achieve and we are grateful to you for bringing these matters to our attention as it is only by receiving feedback that we are able to ensure that we are offering the correct standards of service.
