Swallow Cottage has a delightful air of tranquillity as soon as your tyres crunch the gravel drive. After arriving tired or stressed, or both, Swallow begins to work its magic. This holiday home, and I use the word home, because that is exactly what it becomes for the duration of your stay, is a real gem. Jill and Mike give over their beautifully restored barn property wholeheartedly and for a while the dream of owning a country retreat becomes a reality.
This is one of our favourite places to be, and it is with reluctance that I am advertising it to you, the reader. Only because the owners, who clearly, but apparently effortlessly work so hard to give the gift of a lovely holiday, do they deserve your custom, and it is because of that fact that I am writing this for you all to see.
What you won’t feel from the website is what it is really like to live there. It is a haven for stressed Stopfordians like us. The property is surrounded by countryside, wild flower meadows exhibiting butterflies that I haven’t seen for many years. Nestled amongst the various fruit and apple trees is a trampoline for the children, where they can bounce to their hearts content along with the resident rabbits. We love to take a meander down to the local traeth (which is accessible direct from the property) through hidden paths and countryside which is the essence of Anglesey. The only noise you will encounter here is the pet horse whinnying and an overhead bird of prey circling above.
On arrival, you will receive the most delicious homemade cakes and because this is an organic fruit farm, homemade organic preserves and condiments. The children’s bedroom is spacious and tastefully furnished with oak furniture with an added toy cupboard much to the delight of the children, with books and games, so they really feel at home! A lot of thoughtful little touches are added, from fresh flowers on the sills, to a quality selection of films for all ages to watch and a decent music system.
We always self-cater here, and to be honest it never feels a chore. We would much rather dine in with beautiful views few every window, what restaurant could offer that? Because it is literally up a small hill behind Benllech Swallow Cottage offers both tranquillity as well as accessibility. Bradley’s Deli down the road is a must for daily packed lunches and is often our first port of call. The fish and chip shop opposite (next to the Texaco station) a little way up the hill offer the nicest fish and chips we have ever tasted. They certainly don’t stay on your plate for very long!
Places of interest both on the island and further afield on the mainland are too numerous to mention. If you don’t know the area at all, you will go a long way to find the beauty and diversity of this special place. From beautiful unspoilt beaches to stunning mountain terrain the choice is yours. I can guarantee that you will not have the time to see and do all you would like and a return holiday will be a must.
This may sound like a cliché, but early booking is advisable because once this property enters everyone’s radar, anyone wishing to stay in this beautiful place would wish to return again and again.
