My fiance and I stayed at the St Davids, for my birthday last saturday night. We checked in and as our room was not ready, we were given a complimentary upgrade to a room facing Penarth (had previously booked a room facing Mermaid Quay). We were obviously v pleased with this, especially as we had to wait nearly 10 minutes to be seen at reception - only one staff member on duty, at 2pm on a saturday??
So we jumped in the lift, anxious to see our room. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The room, just didnt have the wow factor, that I would expect from a 5* hotel. What you pay (a lot) for is the view over Cardiff Bay. The balcony in particular needs attention, the separators - some sort of white plastic material between balconies, are now very dicoloured, and paint is peeling from the railings, not to mention the dirty glass window, which ran the entire length of the room.
There were no tea and coffee making facilities (we requested and got, a nice tray of these though), the telly was in a weird tower thing, the remote lacked batteries - and not a flat screen in sight. The toiletries were poor - although Molton Brown were used in the toilets in the lobby - they are not used in the rooms.
On the plus side - bed was huge and very comfortable, and the Spa was fab - although, again, looks a bit tired now. We didnt have breakfast there (didnt thing £19 per person was acceptable really). Bar was OK but VERY expensive - this is not the place to make a night of it!
Staff were very helpful and friendly, with exception of the girl on reception when we checked out the next day, who didnt even ask if we'd enjoyed our stay, perhaps she was having a bad day.
I'm glad we stayed there, I'd always wanted to, and it still seems to have the Celeb factor (saw a few milling about the bar and reception) - but I doubt whether we'll stay there again. Our money is better spent elsewhere I think, I dont think this offers either luxury or value for money to be honest.
