Stayed here for two weeks on business with colleagues from Ireland and the UK. After we were served chicken that was still blood red inside and cold Steak and Kidney pies we never ate there again. Fusty smelling Verve lounge area and sticky unclean tables were a huge dissapointment. My shower was unclean and had a brown film all over the tiles where the cleaner could not reach to clean and the extract fan was covered in black dirt.(room 219)
The staff were friendly but the whole place is only rated 4 star because of the pool/fitness facility. We were glad to get home. Yuck Yuck Yuck.

Benefit of the doubt

I'm naming the review benefit of the doubt as I very nearly gave the hotel 3 out of 5.
The Hotel offers very good facilities, including a leisure complex, pub (with bar food) and a restaurant.
We found check-in to be quick and friendly and the reception area had a nice buzz about it. Also, for a city hotel it has quite a nice outlook from the huge terrace at the front of the hotel. You can take your drinks outside too.
We made our way to the room and first impression were good. It looked very comfortable, and a great 32 in LCD TV. The bathroom was also very nice but we did find a mark from the former occupants No. 2 which wasn't very nice! Plus one of the towels, although smelt nice and clean, had some nasty looking stains on it.
We then tried out the beds. As soon as we sat down the beds both rolled across the floor! I lay down and tested the comfort and it moved again, I had visions of waking up half way across the room! Added to that my mattress sloped to the left.
The following morning we had a lovely breakfast with lots of choice from fresh fruits to full english - all very nice.
As I said I gave the Hotel the benefit of the doubt on the above problems as I had every confident that if I'd complained they would have been fixed. Plus the atmosphere and facilities of the Hotel were very good. I would definately give it ago again.

Standardized quality for a reasonable price

The Village is part of the Village hotel chain, in which I stayed several times. I found out it is really all standardized: you will not notice the difference when being in either Cardiff, Birmingham or where-ever. So on the plus side, you know what to expect. On the min side: it is not really personalized.

Rooms are ok, not big but fine. Half of the rooms are located oerlooking the motorway, so noise can be an issue. Good thing is the free internet access throughout the hotel.

Another good thing is the location close to the motorway. Disadvantage is of course that it is quite far from the city centre, so if you are out for heavy touristy shopping, it is not a good place to stay.

The restaurant is OK, but not superb. Morning buffet is of the same quality as the evening dinner.

24 Feb 2008 | Trip type: Friends getaway

A friend and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Village hotel in Cardiff. First impression was very good. Nice big car park with disabled bays close to the Reception area. Check in was quick and easy and staff very friendly. On arrival at our room (twin) we were unexpectedly disappointed. Although it was quite large and front facing it was very basic. We unpacked but after reading the internal literature we read that it was possible to upgrade for as little as £20 per night. My friend went back to reception to enquire about upgrading to be told that our room (602) was "Executive" which was their best. She returned, quite amazed that this was the best they could offer as I have stayed in nicer Travelodges. The beds were hard weren't made properly (sheets not tucked in) and the pillows were really hard; both us us woke up with stiff necks. We asked if they had any better pillows, but obviously not. Housekeeping did provide extra pillows but these were just as hard and flat. The towels were really rough and quite gray in colour, as were they duvet covers. Not the nice white crisp ones you would expect to find, expecially in a Village hotel. We couldn't fault the staff, especially in the restaurant. They were extremely polite and couldn't do enough for you. The food in the Verve restaurant was also exellent and excelent value for money. We would stay again, but would definately have to lower our expectations as far as the rooms were concerned.

Bad soundproofing - very noisy

Stayed here on a Saturday night - somewhat of a mistake. The rooms have bad soundproofing and the television from next door was clearly audible. Worse, however, was the pounding disco from the wedding, which went on until gone 1am. The receptionist said he would try to get it turned down, but in fact the volume level rose.

Won't be staying here again. The high level of noise is unacceptable for the price.
