Churchills is in a nice suburby part of Cardiff, around a couple of miles from the city centre. I stayed there before around 8 years ago and was given a grotty little single room so didn't make the effort to stay there again... Eight years later - have things improved?

Well this time I was given a sizeable double room on the third floor. It had a nice double aspect so there was plenty of light but there wasn't much of a view. It was ok and the bathroom large-ish and clean.

Breakfast was ordered at the table but was quick and tasty.

I found Churchills to be a perfectly acceptable place to stay. It's not a nice Hilton or Marriott and didn't have all the facilities you'd get somewhere like that. Unfortunately I think it was just a tad expensive for what you get - I (well, my employers) paid £70 a night for B&B - you can get rates like that at some of the nicer hotels. But if they're full then Churchills will do as a second choice...

It is really hard finding a decent place to stay in Cardiff and I think Churchills is a good option. I stayed in one of the mews cottages which are basically mini-suites offering a bedroom, en suite and living room with sofa bed. Was plenty of room for the three of us and only cost £100 per night. The bathroom is upstairs next to the bedroom so you have to be quite friendly with the people sharing the downstairs! This isn't a stylish boutique hotel but it is simple, clean and avoids any chintz.

We visted the bar on Friday night and it looks like it is a popular haunt of the area's senior citizens who were enjoying a drink and dancing along to the singer who was blasting out popular ballads. If I'd been staying in the actual hotel this could have been a bit annoying! If you're looking for a cool hotel bar this is not it.

Breakfast is served at the hotel and I would heartily recommend the kippers and poached eggs. In addition to a great breakfast, there's also loads of free parking space which, given its handy location near the M4, makes getting in and out of Cardiff very easy.

Where do I start? Uninterested staff? Smoky, very poky room in need of refurbishment? Salmon served at dinner that was actually still frozen (not just cold) in the middle? (They seemed surprised that I thought there was anything wrong with it). Uninspired bar. Would never ever return.

This is a small but very nice hotel quite close to city centre. Staff friendly. We stayed in the mews cottages. Large bedroom with two large sofas downstairs. Food good. Good value for money.
