“Decent hotel for price paid”

Mercure The Lodge Cardiff

4 Jun 2008

I stayed here for a course in late may 2008. The hotel is located about 10 - 15 minutes walk to the cardiff central station. Also quite close to the cardiff bay area which is quite pleasant.
The hotel itself is in an industrial area. My initial impression for a 55 £ double bed room was that it was very clean. However, then realised that the phone wasn't working. The room was facing the railway tracks, so you could possibly hear a bit of screeching at time, unless you're a deep sleeper like me.
On the 2nd day, I made my third complaint with regards to the phone, and was upgraded to a family room (I was alone) ....:)

Some of the staff can appear not very friendly, however some are very accomodating and do their best to make your stay pleasant. i even got them to bring an ironing board for me during my stay of 4 days.

In essence, I think its good value for money to a certain extent. Minuses must include the train tracks at the back, and also some staff who take quite a while to register and act upon basic complaints.

Plus point, its not very far from town and its cheaper than most hotels I've checked on tripadvisor.com.

Would consider for a short stay work related.

Booked by work in here at the last minute. It's on an industrial estate with nothing close by. When I checked at 7.30 pm I was not informed the air con was not working. I had to leave immediately on business but put on the air con and I returned at 9.00 pm. The room temp was 31.5 degrees, windows do not open. I called reception several times with no answer. I finally went downstaird to find one member of staff very harrassed trying to deal with everything. I was told air con would not be fixed until the next day. I was not impressed. I should have been told this fact when I checked in.

Breakfast/bar is like a canteen not the type of place to relax and have a drink. Vending machines for drinks and snacks.

The rooms themselves were fine if a bit hot!!!

I would never recommend this hotel due to the poor customer service, location and ambiance.

“Great Place to Stay!”

Mercure The Lodge Cardiff

3 May 2008

We stayed here for my hen weekend and we loved the hotel and would definetely go back. At first we were a bit worried when we walked from the station - roundabout is a death trap to cross but for the rest of the stay we just caught taxis everywhere. All staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. My room had a bath but no shower - which we would of prefered so we asked at front desk and were moved immediatley without any hassle! Rooms spacious and very clean - no complaints. Breakfast was great and we filled ourselves up on this so we could skip lunch!! We weren't kept awake by any noises and I'm a light sleeper. Overall no complaints and would recommend to others who are going to cardiff for nightlife.

“take no notice of bad reviews”

Mercure The Lodge Cardiff

30 Apr 2008

i booked this hotel for a group of friends on a hen party. read some bad reviews after and was quite worried, take no notice. this hotel is perfectly sited for a stay in the city. it will take you around 15mins to walk into town, when you cross the road outside the hotel cross on the flyover,(not on the roundabout) no problems , the taxi ride was costing us between £4 and £6 not too bad. the hotel staff are friendly and helpful, rooms are clean, beds very comfortable and, the showers are amazing. there were a few stag and hen parties the weekend we stayed but there were none of the usually expected noise,. the hotel is on a light industrial estate but you can be guaranteed a quiet night as the premises near the hotel close early. if you want a hotel in cardiff that gives excellent value for money give it a try , we did and would use it again without hessitation

I stayed here for work and had several complaints about it. I don't normally stay in particularly classy hotels for work but this one was much worse than a usual travel lodge type place and I certainly would never spend any of my own money on staying here.

Firstly it was in a terrible location - not very near to the station, the bay, or anything else very interesting. There was nowhere within easy walking distance and we had to tell the taxis we had to get that it was 'next to the VW dealership' which says it all really.

Then the standard of accommodation was poor and very uninspiring. There was a smell of smoke in the corridors, the rooms backed onto an industrial estate and there was no bath. There was no remote control for the TV which meant I couldn't use it, and the wiring for the lights made no sense at all.

The bar/breakfast area was tiny and had no atmosphere. They had no room service, I had to get some crisps from a vending machine when getting back to the hotel late and they didn't sell wine by the glass - only the half bottle.

Lastly, having hoped for a lie-in I was in fact woken at 7 by an extremely loud alarm which went off for several minutes. When I went downstairs and asked what it was, the staff told me 'someone set an alarm off in their room' and they did not offer me any apology for the disturbance.

The only plus point was that staff were helpful in ordering taxis. But I definitely would never stay here again.
