“Great location - disappointed by the hotel”

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in a superior room. The room itself was good, but the bathroom was disappointing as it was small, with mouldy sealant and the shower was laughably bad - cold for ages then ragingly hot, leaked and had to be hand held as there was nowhere other than on top of the taps to hang it.

The restaurant itself was fine - and here one of the barmen was excellent. My wife's vodka and diet coke was flat and when she complained the barman explained that there was a problem - but then he reappeared a few minutes later having gone out to a shop to buy some diet coke and brought he a fresh drink; top notch.

Otherwise the staff were civil but not friendly and didn't smile or make you feel especially welcome - and this was a common theme throughout the area in a variety of places - which left us underwhelmed with the whole Welsh experience (despite the great scenery).

Breakfast was disappointing and a real opportunity missed. Best example of this was the sausages (yes I know that sounds trivial) which were anonymous and tasteless whereas there must be some great local versions available, and for £91 a night for B&B I think this should have been possible. It looked like the whole breakfast was sourced from Iceland (store not country).

So overall not value for money, not a place where we felt valued as guests (except by the great barman) and we came away wishing we had stayed in a B&B.

The beach at Rhossili is brilliant and the Wormshead itself spectacular - and if you like walking there are numerous great routes.

We failed to find a good pub for lunch (avoid the Countryman at Scurlage if you are expecting a good country pub) - and wondered if this explained why there are none in the area that are listed in the Good Pub Guide.

So overall we wouldn't recommend the place, and generally the whole area was disappointing form a hospitality and attitude point of view. In comparision Devon was brilliant and is consistently much better for these things - and also has excellent scenery, walking etc.

“Getaway to Rhosilli”

The Worms Head Hotel

We stayed here for a short 2 night break in February 2007. Worms Head Hotel sits on the cliff above the sweep of Rhosilli bay, the longest sandy bay in the Gower, west of Swansea. There are great views over the bay and over the cliffs of Worms Head itself, from many of the bedrooms at the hotel - and from the restaurant rooms too.

The hotel offers bed & breakfast packages for £81 per night for a couple - which is reasonable for what you get. Breakfast is great - full english, with cereals on the side. The bedroom was a good size, clean and tidy, but the bathroom was disappointing, especially the shower, which was a poor weedy specimen.

The hotel offers lunch and dinner, which takes the form of pub-style meals, including some great steaks and fish dishes. Nothing fancy, but good value for money.

Car parking is curious at this hotel - you park in a public car park just outside the hotel at a cost of £2 a day - the hotel does not have a car park of its own. You can reach Rhosilli easily by bus from Swansea if you don't have a car.

The location is great for walking - but expect a lot of climbing up and down. Rhosilli bay is a wonderful sweep of 3 miles of sand, great for bathing in the summer. Surfers appreciate it at any time.

“Highly Recommended”

The Worms Head Hotel

Our stay at this hotel was wonderful - the view from our recently rennovated room was spectacular and waking up to the sound of the sea is amazing! The service was friendly and the local ale certainly quenched the thirst after a long walk on the beach. We chose meals using local ingredients - I had the Welsh Black steak and my husband had the local fish which was caught from the sea below - both were cooked to perfection! I highly recommend a stay at this beautiful location!

We have just returned from 4 nights at this fabulous hotel and my well-travelled partner and I consider the views to be amongst the best we have seen anywhere in the world. We stayed in Room 18, which has a superb panoramic view of the wide bay and lovely beach. We had good service from the helpful staff and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was good to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

Breakfasts were excellent, if you liked cooked breakfasts, but for those who wanted a continental breakfast it was a bit unimaginative. We ate in the restaurant 2 out of 4 nights and we were impressed with the menu and quality of the food and service.

The hotel is a good base for walking and touring around the Gower, the walk and scramble on to the Worms Head was challenging but was exhilarating when we finally got there. Overall, our short break was an experience that exceeded our expectations., we will certainly visit there again.

My boyfriend and I were visiting South Wales partly as a week-end break and partly to see relatives. I am half Welsh and always sing the praises of the Welsh and the beautiful country of Wales. The Gower penninsula is in my view the jewel in the Crown and Rossilli it's Koh-i-Noor. Unnfortunately it was a very wet day when we visited Rhossilli and we were in desperate need of morning coffee. We went in to the Worms Head hotel and was greeted by a very friendly receptionist who assured us we could indeed be served with coffee in the bar downstairs. We waited ten minutes before anyone approached us even though we could hear someone moving about in the bar area and we were pretty sure whoever it was knew we were there. Eventually someone approached us and ranted at my partner to take his feet off the wooden plinth!!!!!!!! He still didn't ask us if we were being served and would we like to be!!!
We left the hotel in disgust without being served coffee but I felt so aggrieved by this man's behaviour that I returned to make a complaint. The man was in reception by this time and I put my complaint to him. He began shouting again and wagging his finger at me asked if we put our feet up at home!!!!! He made no effort to apologise to a customer for:

a) not serving us promptly
b) not serving us at all!!
c) his disgracefully rude behaviour.
I left with the parting shot that this hotel with one of the most stunning positions in the world and I have travelled alot of it, would suffer because of this obnoxious little man's attitude.
We also met rudenness in the beach cafe a little later and poor service in the next coffee shop we tried.
The Welsh have a poor image which I have always defended. To meet two rude and obnoxious welsh people in the space of fifteen minute does not bode well for the future of the image of Welsh people, the majorithy of whom like my family are kind, generous and lovely people.
