We booked the room at short notice and it being August we were surprised to still find rooms aavailable. Our prefered choice the Manor House had no vacancies. Maybe we should have twigged something there and then!
The hotel was nicely situated with good views of Mull etc. The rooms were tastefully decorated. Our bedroom was a good size but had no telephone and poor quality TV and only the basic 4 channels. The bathroom was small having to dry oneself in the bedroom after a bath because of lack of space, being no room to swing a bath towel!!!
The arrangements for dinner were somewhat regimented. Everyone had to be in the bar between 7 and 7 30 to place their order. So that meant that it was rather crowded before we all went into the dining room. It was fortunate perhaps the hotel was half- full.
The food we had was very average and lacked imagination. The service was a bit amateurish e.g no water jugs provide they would top up your glass up when you asked. There was very little if any delay between courses , as soon as we downed our knife and fork from the starter the main course was put in front of us! So other nights we ate the starter very slowly!!
It seemed that they were anxious to get dinner over and done with as quick as possible Perhaps the chef was paid by the hour!
Breakfast itself was good although we found the time a bit restrictive. Serving only between 8.30 to 9.30 We would have preferred from 8 so we could get on with the days visits etc.
We did not find the hostess the most amiable of people. This was also mentioned by an earlier contributor.
All in all we were extremely disappointed with our stay and considering the rate of £204 per night we would have expected better quality accommodation, facilities, food and service. Needless to say we would not recommend this hotel. WE WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE BACK.
Next time we are in Oban we will try the Manor House.
