“Comfortable stay”

4 of us stayed here for several days - unfortunately very wet weather but the surrounding area is lovely. Melrose itself is a beautiful town and well worth a visit.
All of us had comfortable rooms - one couple had a double room at the front of the hotel overlooking the River Tweed. The room itself was huge and extremely comfortable. The other two rooms (singles) were in the ground floor annexe behind reception - while small and quite dark and with a lovely view of a fence and part of the car park they were comfortable enough and well equipped.
We all enjoyed the food in the restaurant and enjoyed the Bar's stock of malts and wines.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The only thing I could complain about was that often they did not quite know what was going on and always had to ask someone else but nothing to complain too much about.
I'd go again!
If you have kids there is a Donkey Sanctuary a 10 min walk away. They do guided tours which involve feeding the donkeys.

My husband and I booked one night in this hotel as we were guests at a wedding reception being held there. As we could not check in before an specific time this meant reception was full of wedding guests having just come from the church service. When we saw the room we were quite disgusted by the £150 per night cost. The room was small, dull, and in need of a makeover. After the wedding reception ie around 12.30pm we retired to the room only to discover a blocked washbasin. As it was the middle of the night we saved our complaint for morning. Breakfast was cold and unappetising.

As we were wedding guests we were reluctant to complain both about the room and the breakfast as the bride and groom's parents were within earshot.

We complained when checking out and later wrote to both the hotel and the Scottish Tourist Board. The hotel's view was that we should have complained at the time.

We would never stay in this hotel again nor recommend it to anyone. It does not deserve the 4 stars it has and is well overpriced. We have had better rooms on a Greek Island.

We had read mixed reviews of this hotel and weren't sure what to expect but it was excellent. It is a little worn at the edges - don't expect modern hotel standards (ie. the usual brown leather sofas and no atmosphere...) but it is all the better for the faded country charm. Food was excellent - and good wine too. Quite a formal/silver service dinner/breakfast. Great standard of cooking and lovely flavours (although an extra touch of garnish wouldn't go amiss to cheer things up a bit eg. a sprinkle of parsley on a plate of smoked haddock). Try the Dryburgh special for breakfast. Only slight grumbles were that they stopped serving breakfast at 9.30am (we went at the weekend), and that there were no smoking facilities at all (eg, no shelter outside - it poured rain all weekend), but then it's time He gave up anyway. Great setting and mostly cheery staff.

Took my parents for a weekend break to Scotland. Found the hotel on Google and decided to give it go. So glad we did! Rooms were lovely, very spacious and had brilliant views of the Abbey and the River Tweed (although needed a bit of tlc). Food in the restaurant was superb, both to look at and to eat, and lunch in the bar was lovely but but the choice was a little limited.
We had afternoon tea sitting out on the lawn, watching people on the putting green.

Plenty of places to visit nearby and lots of lovely walks. We even ventured into Edinburgh for the afternoon, which took us about an hour.

Looking forward to our next stay.

After our poor experience in December ("lovely hotel, shame about the room") we were invited back and spent 2 days 11-13 April. This time we were given a deluxe room which was amazing. It was absolutely huge, with a wonderful view of the garden and river from an enormous bay window, which had an armchair, couch and table in the bay. There was even a chaise longue, as well as a gigantic canopied bed. We were also supplied with the usual bathrobes, fruit and water - but also - a nice touch - binoculars with which to admire the view.
As before the staff were very pleasant and helpful - the "is everything OK ?"question seemed to actually matter. The food in the restaurant was superb on both evenings, together with a wonderful window table. Service again was prompt and efficient, yet not at all rushed.
As we left we felt we were saying goodbye to friends who genuinely cared if we had had a good time. So - my advice? book a deluxe room if you can -it's well worth the extra cost.
