After our poor experience in December ("lovely hotel, shame about the room") we were invited back and spent 2 days 11-13 April. This time we were given a deluxe room which was amazing. It was absolutely huge, with a wonderful view of the garden and river from an enormous bay window, which had an armchair, couch and table in the bay. There was even a chaise longue, as well as a gigantic canopied bed. We were also supplied with the usual bathrobes, fruit and water - but also - a nice touch - binoculars with which to admire the view.
As before the staff were very pleasant and helpful - the "is everything OK ?"question seemed to actually matter. The food in the restaurant was superb on both evenings, together with a wonderful window table. Service again was prompt and efficient, yet not at all rushed.
As we left we felt we were saying goodbye to friends who genuinely cared if we had had a good time. So - my advice? book a deluxe room if you can -it's well worth the extra cost.

Stayed 16-18 March 2007. Stayed in room 4 (a double). Room was reasonably spacious, well appointed, fresh decor, all furniture in good condition. Biggest bed we've ever slept in! Everything functioned (tv, kettle, hairdryer, shower) and we had no complaints. Food was superb at both dinner and breakfast, quality could not be faulted and the service was of a high standard too. We were offered bread rolls on sitting down and fresh ones with our soup. There were also canapes offered once we had ordered. Not a cheap weekend but good value for what we got (particularly the food) and would definitely recommend it.

Arrived mid-afternoon and checked-in by friendly, welcoming receptionist. Standard room overlooking front of the hotel was fine size but the ‘saggy’ uncomfortable bed was well past it’s ‘sell by’ date. Room maintenance was poor with the ceiling having been ‘patched-up’ a different colour – I suspect a previous water leak .
Went for dinner in busy dining room around 8pm and greeted by friendly staff. Although we were booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast package, annoyed to have to pay additional £2.50 for smoked salmon starter and £7.95 for fillet beef. Although salmon was fine, the beef dish was absolutely appalling. Served on a bed of cold congealed ‘risotto’ the mouthfeel and indeed taste, left a lot to be desired. On complaining, the waitress offered to replace the risotto with potatoes. Duly accepted this alternative and 5 minutes later was confronted by an ‘orange’ colour mash that brought back unpleasant memories of over-boiled cabbage and school dinners. Offers to replace the replacement were politely declined.
Similar scenario at breakfast next morning. The ordered kippers probably had a nodding acquaintance with the sea at some point in time but were inedible in the here and now.
To summarise. The hotel is in a lovely location and the staff friendly, however, décor was a bit tired. Food on the other hand was of dubious quality, poorly presented and most certainly overpriced. Not an hotel I'd be pleased to recommend to friends.

“Unforgettable”

This was a trip for work and a troop of 6 of us invaded the beautiful hotel. Our work days were very long and hard and it was such a tremendous pleasure to return each night to the beautiful facility. It was not just the facility however. The staff was absolutely amazing. Based on some of our work needs we pushed the staff hard at times, but never were we met with anything but smiles and offers to do even more: from emergency sack lunches at 7:00 PM and in less than 10-minutes, to needing the breakfast staff to whip something up before they were open, to a 3:30 AM return after a long day to find the night porter waiting with the fire going and offers to get us absolutely anything our hearts desired. It is in no small part that the way we were treated at the hotel solidified our new found love for this wonderful country and its people.

The staff consistently exceeded our expectations throughout our 8 day stay. Numerous examples of true hospitality and the ability to anticipate our needs were evident throughout our stay. When at the last minute we needed to work all night at a site, the reception staff arranged pack lunches within 10 minutes; saving the day. After arriving back "home" after a long day of work at nearly 3:30AM, the porter had the fire going and offered to get us something to drink and room service breakfast in the morning if we would like. We felt like family and look forward to returning "home" again in the future.
