Stayed at the Days Inn Gretna Green for 1 night in July whilst looking for a wedding venue in Gretna Green. The hotel is in the welcome break services area off the A74 (M74) and used to be called Welcome Break Gretna Green. Location is a few minutes drive away from Gretna Green so it's ideal if you're attending a wedding there. It's actually set back from the services and is surrounded by trees so there's very little noise from the surrounding area.
We booked directly on the Days Inn website which is cheaper than booking over the phone so bear this in mind if you want to stay there.
Check in staff were very friendly and helpful. The corridor on the way to the room smelt a bit musty but when we got into the room it smelt fresh and clean so we were pleasantly surprised by this after the corridor smell.
Bedroom and bathroom were a comfortable size and the bed was very comfy. Bathroom featured shower (over bath), shower pressure was excellent although the shower head was a bit low down and you had to duck to get your head under (I'm 5'10"). Heated towel rail was a great touch.
Room was pleasant, decor very fresh, very comfy bed, slept well. Amenities include TV (with wake up alarm), tea & coffee making facilities, trouser press, hair dryer. Iron and other bits available on request. Hotel said that toiletries were available from reception if you forgot anything, got the impression these were free but didn't ask so not 100% sure.
Continental breakfast was available at £5 each; there is no eating area in the hotel so it's served in the room between 6 and 9.30 am. Breakfast was quite decent and filling. Alternatively you can walk over to the services and eat there if you wish.
A few minor niggles but hardly worth mentioning:
- Shower head a bit low
- Extractor fan over the shower was very powerful and caused the shower curtain to be sucked toward you whilst showering. Finally managed to stop this happening by weighing the curtain bottom down on the side of the bath, unfortunately this resulted in a flooded bathroom and a hasty cleaning up job!
- TV had terrestrial & some satellite channels, but channel 5 was unwatchable and the satellite channels (Sky One, Sky Sports) were rather grainy.
Overall - a clean, comfortable hotel with very friendly staff. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a comfy stay at an affordable price. Think Travelodge quality and you're more or less spot on.
