After a difficult 6 months with my mother in hospital and eventually dieing suddenly,we felt we needed a complete chill out break. The Selkirk Arms was an excellant choice where we could come and go like at home. Rooms where spotless and there were extras such as fresh fruit to help yourself to etc. Meals were excellant with super waiting staff for whom nothing was an effort. We would definatley go back

Having served as an Officer in the British Army for the past 16 years I have sampled some of the very best food and accommodation and conversely some of the very worst.
The Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kircudbright as a 3 Star establishment provides an extremely high standard of cuisine, service and accommodation. As an all-rounder it should be considered towards the top of its rating.
The setting is idyllic, the management and staff are some of the most helpful and friendly I have ever encountered. The restaurant and bar menu provide delicious regional dishes at a very reasonable price with a quality selection of fine wines.
I would recommend this hotel as a must for anyone looking in the area who is after either a comfortable and relaxing weekend break or a mid week hotel base for business.
I will certainly be back!
My husband and I stayed at this hotel over the May Bank Holiday. Accommodation in Kirkudbright was hard to find - all the B&B's (which were my first choice) were full. This hotel got good reviews on Trip Advisor and had a room left, so we stayed here. It is situated in a quiet residential location. Kirkudbright isn't that big, so everything is within easy reach. We stayed in Room 17, a twin room that was a bit past it's sell-by-date. The bathroom although big, had bacteria around the bath area. The bed's were hard and rather small for single beds (we had a twin room) and the room is situated right next to a door at the top of the stairs that gives access to the corridor - and also directly above a lane that leads to the kitchens so we got noice from both areas into the early hours. We also heard other guests talking - so it isn't soundproof either. Despite this, we ate at the restaurant - as there wasn't many other eating places in Kirkudbright, and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was very good and nicely presented. The owner did seem a bit harassed when we turned up for our table, informing us that we could sit at our table but would have to wait a while to be served as they were busy(despite having a reservation for 8.00pm), or we could come back! Beware when asking for a glass of wine too - despite telling them I wanted a specific glass, it comes from a tap in the bar , not from the bottle - virtually on draught and isn't very pleasant. Breakfast was great - lots to choose from and really good quality. We would stay here again in a few years time - it has just been taken over by Best Western so improvements will probably be made to the rooms and the decor - and it is worth it for the food and the great breakfast.

Only stayed one night booked through late rooms under a very good offer.
Arrived quite late 8.30pmish dinner stops at 9pm we were requested to order more or less right away, which we didn't object to but not really four star attitude.
Meal we had was fine, pretty large portions, fast service and reasonably priced, but certainly not red rosette standard.
Bedroom for the price we paid was acceptable, bathroom could have been cleaner!
Breakfast was very good and again fast service.
Overall for what we paid we got value for money, fast and pleasant service, and a nice addition was all the staff were Scottish.
Would return at this sort of price level but would not be prepared to pay the full tariff.
