“Not good value”

Auchen Castle Hotel

18 Jun 2008

I have to echo the author of the previous review ('Rip off hotel') - I'm very unimpressed. I also attended a wedding at the 'castle' which was very nice and went very well. However, don't be tempted to stay the night.

When we arrived we were told that our room had a problem with the toilet (which I think was leaking). So we were transferred to another room by the very pleasant receptionist, Martha.

However, the room that we got was small and pokey - and I'm fairly sure that the room we were supposed to be in was much larger. Not only that, but there were the remains of someone's peanuts under the bed which did not convince me of the standards of cleanliness in the hotel.

The room was also tatty, with large chunks of paint work missing from the window frame and skirting boards. The TV was of the small portable type and had fairly average reception. The shower was not great either with fluctuating temperatures. The ceiling of the bathroom was covered in wall paper that was bubbling and starting to peel.

We asked for an iron - and this was brought promptly. But I think a hotel of this price should be able to supply a decent steam iron without crud all over the base of it.

There is a truly hideous building in the grounds which I think is the annex. You get a lovely view of it from the window in the dining room where we had breakfast. And talking about breakfast ... I had to send the toast back not once but twice, since I had asked for toast and not warm slices of bread. Any hotel that can't actually make toast doesn't really deserve your money - and certainly won't be taking any more of mine.

Recently attended a wedding at this hotel. Wedding was very good and i do not think the couple had any problem with arrangements. Beautiful venue, but consider recommending your guests stay elsewhere.
As a guest i felt the hotel was over priced and does not compare or provide a four star service. For £235.00 per night we carried our own luggage to room. Room was clean but had no hot drink facilites, shower luke warm and room cold - apparently this is because it is an old building!
Breakfast is served at 7.30 to 9.00 in the morning, very little sight of staff, drinks expensive and no brandy glasses as the manager says it is not in her budget.
Would not recommend for families as we had to book two rooms as they can only cater for two adults and a child.
Do not stay in the lodge, it looks like the staff quarters and can only be accessed via a electronic fob. Our friends could not be contacted there as there is also no guest phone in lobby.

“Wonderful Wedding Location”

I had my wedding reception at Auchen Castle in August of 2007, an Absolutely Amazing event that felt surreal in its perfection. Like other reviewers, I had some initial doubts because correspondence was a bit sparse in the beginning, but my wedding coordinator was replaced (with Claire), and the rest of the wedding preparations went smoothly from that point on. I live in the United States, so having an organized, helpful coordinator was certainly important to me. Something that I do want to mention is that to get married in the Roman Catholic church, the ceremony has to be performed in a church; only a civil ceremony can be performed at the castle. I was married in Holy Trinity Church in Lockerbie by Father Joe, a location and priest that I also recommend! Just make sure if you take that route you get all your pre-marriage documentation in place in a timely manner.

Upon my arrival at Auchen Castle, I was treated with the utmost respect, and the staff was very attentive to all my needs. The decor is what one would expect from a castle, charming and historic. The grounds are meticulously maintained, and quite an ideal backdrop for wedding pictures. Everything went off without a hitch on my wedding day; I even got a rainbow! Heather (wedding coordinator on duty the day of my wedding) made sure everything in my contract was honored. I hired the piper (Scott) that the castle recommended, and it really made the difference getting out of the limo at the church; it felt like I walked onto a movie set. Alister Lynn (another castle recommendation) did my pictures and dvd, and Kristin (photographer) and Fred (videographer) did an excellent job. Fiona (another castle recommendation) did my flowers, and they were so beautiful. Kris (castle Maitre D’) was the height of professionalism; he anticipated any and all needs during dinner, and everyone at my wedding reception raved about how wonderful dinner was.

The food, the service, the scenery, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Don’t let the negative reviews turn you away. Auchen Castle really is just the perfect place for a wedding, and the castle really does a great job of setting up fairy-tale weddings; I know from personal experience.
