On our arrival at Dunlaw having tucked the car away on the street, we were welcomed warmly by the owners Barbara and Douglas and shown the location of bathrooms and facilities, and up to our room.
We'd ordered a double at a very reasonable price, and it certainly met our expectations.
The bed was roomy and comfortable, with plenty pillows and a warm duvet, and the room featured a handy sink with kettle, tea and coffee available. So far so normal.
But! Looking out of the window we were greeted with a lovely view to the mature and well-kept garden, with many unusual and interesting plants - my favourite was the eucalyptus and the monkey puzzle just outside the window. Somehow I forgot we were up in Dundee, and it felt more like a southern holiday location.
Certainly a vast improvement from your usual plastic chain hotels, which we aren't really interested in to be honest.
After a very good sleep - it is a quiet location being in a cute little crescent - we wandered off down to breakfast.
Now, loving our food like we do, sometimes breakfast can be a bit of a disappointment. Not so! The breakfast bar was stocked with
beautifully ripe fruit. We must admit we nicked a banana or two for afterwards, sorry about that, at least we didn't take the kettle and towels.
There was a fruit salad with many different types in it, and home-made Marmalade with pineapple and rhubarb jam. Very yummy! Lots of cereals too. The dried fruit was a particular delight, being moist and super tasty.
And, since we both asked for a vegetarian breakfast, we were offered the choice of a quality soya or almond milk alternative which was a thoughtful touch.
The cooked breakfast itself was just the perfect amount and not greasy at all (a personal bugbear of mine), and proper Linda McCartney sausages instead of cheap catering ones. We had the breakfast twice (no, not on the same day) and the fruit salad was different, and the home-made jam was different too.
And, we could have flora butter alternative too. All these details were very much appreciated. Thank you too to our young attentive servers at breakfast, who made sure we were stocked with piles of perfect toast.
Wifi was well used, as we are data gluttons as well. It performed admirably despite our myriad of devices connected to it.
All in all, an extremely pleasant stay for a really good price, very handy for the town centre, we weren't expecting to get somewhere so close that was so good AND priced well!
If you are looking for somewhere to stay for night or more, we both recommend here highly. There are a couple of low scored reviews on Trip Advisor - and I can only assume these people were pernickity in the extreme. Ignore them as they were probably having a bad hair day or something and needed to vent. Trust us instead.
Thank you very much to all at Dunlaw, and when we are up in Dundee again, we will be beetling right back without a doubt.
Please arrange to have a Koala in the eucalyptus tree next time though if you don't mind.
