How wonderful to have an individually owned restaurant with such superb quality, rather than the ever growing band of formulaic, dull chain businesses.
The Ship is a wonderful experience from start to finish with excellent service from the highly trained, attentive but not overly pushy staff. They are all clearly expertly trained, from mixing the perfect Bloody Mary, to understanding the wines (and avoiding the commercial trick of conctantly filling your glass), to serving the wonderful food.
The ambience is warm, friendly and very comfortable at any time of year. Tables outside are a great option if warm. But it's the food which is spectular, particularly the seafood. The variety, freshness and taste are outstanding. The mussels in cider, seared scallops with parsnip rosti and fresh oysters were just some of the choices. It's also very good value relative to other top restaurants in the area, with a mixture of 'starters' being a good option.
Anything from a bowl of chips or mussels at the bar, to a lighter snack near the bar, to a full meal in the main restaurant are available and they can't do enough to help you choose what suits you best.
What better way to visit Leith as a visitor too.
Do not miss this amazing experience. Long may it keep going.
