The hotel was described in our Guide Book as the most contemporary hotel in edinburgh and we booked it on that basis for a two night stay expecting it to be very clean, trendy & modern in style. We were extremly dissapointed as the hotel was cheaply modernised & failed we felt in its attempt at being a trendy art hotel. The lighting was low and fluorescent but it didnt hide the scuffed and marked paintwork on the walls in the corridors. The carpets were not so clean either. Our double room was narrow but adequate & the bed was a very decent size & confortable but the bedding was poorly maid & laundered & the room not as clean as i would hope. The bathroom was dated and a bit worn. We had a terrible back street view looking onto other buildings. Again the walls painted white were scuffed & marked in our room. The bar would have been nice if again it wasnt looking so worn and tatty. But definately the reception bar and restaurant were the best parts of the hotel where i feel most of the design & cleaning effort was centred the rest was very forgettable. The location is not bad.
Wont be going back.

“Comfortable hotel”

Mercure Point Hotel Edinburgh

4 Jul 2008

I stayed at this hotel for a conference - it is situated a 5 min walk from Edinburgh International Conference Centre. I was upgraded from a double room to a suite, this consisted of a small double room and a study. The view from the huge window was amazing, and when the fog lifted (!!) the castle looked amazing.

The hotel interior is a litle odd, it is a bit dark and industrial looking but the rooms are bright.

The staff were very helpful and the bar was very nice. The breakfast was good - though being a Scot I was hoping for some square sausage- but the fried haggis was great!

“Decent hotel in a good location”

I stayed here in June 2008. It is in close proximity to the centre of Edinburgh and with a good view of the castle. Check in was prompt and efficient. The room was a decent size with a comfortable bed. However the bathroom was a bit shabby with damp around the bath, a leaking shower and chipped décor. The windows of the room did not seem to shut properly as I could hear, very clearly, the noise from the road outside. Light sleepers may wish to avoid rooms at the front of the hotel. The restaurant was bright and airy on the ground floor overlooking Bread Street. I only had breakfast in the restaurant which was good with a decent selection. Overall a decent and comfortable hotel.

Decent hotel and priced accordingly. I was there on business so fortunately was not paying. If I had done so the extra cost for breakfast would have grated.

Minimalist decor sets the scene but lacks that extra touch of customer service - and the cost reflects that. You can do better in Edinburgh for about the same price.

“Wedding reception at The Point”

England's Hidden Secret

We held our wedding reception at the Point Hotel, and the staff and wedding planners went out of their way to make everything work really well, considering we were using the restaurant in the daytime and the conference centre penthouse in the evening. The food was great, and the staff so attentive. All the guests were accommodated in rooms on the same floor, near each other for convenience. Some guests found it was a bit noisy, but then this is the centre of Edinburgh! The penthouse conference centre was really out of this world for a party and dance venue. It was quite magical with the early evening sun shining across to the castle. Having an outside terrace made it relaxing and almost continental, not crowded at all.
The staff were on hand at all times from 3pm to after midnight and we cannot praise them highly enough. If you are wanting a special city wedding with a memorable location in Edinburgh look no further than the Point. Thanks guys!!
