I had researched quite a few hotels in Edinburgh and was close to staying in the Balmoral as some of the reviews were a little critical but in the end I am so happy we chose this hotel. The location is perfect, our room looked directly onto the castle and 30 seconds walk to the main high street shops. The whole hotel is stunning and has a really warm atmosphere but as it is with most top hotels it's the level of service and quality staff that make the difference. The doorman with his top hat and tartan trousers and lovely sense of humour gets you off on the right foot and the staff in the breakfast room were superb, (have a go at the haggis, it's amazing) but really it's hard to single anyone out as everyone was great. The Waldorf names sets certain standards and happily the Caledonian exceeds them all. Than you for a great stay

Room tip: Make sure you get a room with a view of the Castle

We've stayed at The Cally several times over the last 18 years. Our son first walked in one of the bedrooms, and whilst the hotel has certainly moved up a notch in the quality of decor, services and staff, it has sadly lost it's scots character.

I am pleased to hear you have returned to ‘The Caley’ once again and had an excellent stay with us, I am sorry to hear you feel the hotel has lost its Scottish character! We've been meaning to visit for a while, but chose the wrong day to do it unfortunately! We decided to call in for a drink and to look through the menu to plan a proper return for lunch or afternoon tea. Loud music assaulted us on arrival and the ambience in the bar was nil! My elderly mother-in-law said she thought it would be a much smarter place(!) and were we sure it was The Caledonian!

As there were insufficient seats available, we wandered into the atrium but quickly realised everything was reserved and glancing at a menu to plan a return trip was not really an option. To make things worse, not one member of staff asked if they could help us, even though we must have looked lost. Mother-in-law summed it up again with the throw away comment "they don't need our custom, now or in the future". Oops.

Stayed here on a weekend break with my sisters and we absolutely loved it! It is so central to all the shops and restaurants, at the end of Princes Street. The hotel itself is pure luxury, evident from the moment you walk into the foyer. We stayed in a triple room on the 5th floor, which had superb views of the castle. The room itself was spacious, very opulent and comfortable. It had lots of little extras like an nespresso machine, selection of teas, shortbread and bottled water. It is hard to find somewhere to please everyone, but we all agree if back in Edinburgh we would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: The fifth floor has wonderful views of the castle.
