Having never stayed in a Malmaison before, I was surprised upon checking in to hear the check in clerk request that I put down a £50 'deposit' on my credit card to guarantee any purchases I make. I thought this was pretty cheeky, so I refused.
After about 15 minutes in the room, the clerks colleague called and said that seeing as I was not going to leave my credit card details, someone was going to come up and empty the mini bar, as this was company policy. Frankly, I found the fact that they would be prepared to embarrass one of their guests and cause such a scene astounding. I was not prepared to be shown up by this, so the only option was for me to trudge all the way back down and leave my card details!
Having gotten that out of the way, we were able to start relaxing, although belatedly. The hotel room was of a decently large size, and very comfortable. However my particular view was of a brick wall, having requested a 'good view' when making the reservation, but I couldn't be bothered complaining about this.
I would recommend cocktails in the bar- there are many to choose from and at fairly decent prices. Breakfast was also excellent the next day, and there was a good deal on- £25 for two cocktails and two breakfasts the next day.
Having said that, I doubt I would stay in any Malmaison again after the credit card fiasco- surely it should be my choice to leave credit card details, and I shouldn't be threatened with someone coming up to the room to empty the mini bar just because I chose not to.
