This is a large, fairly inexpensive hotel, close to many attractions in Glasgow. We stayed in a double in July of 2005. The room size was decent with high Victorian ceilings. The bed was good. The bathroom was a bit musty, but fully functional with a good shower. The room was clean.

Breakfast was buffet style and decent. Lots to choose from, but be sure to ask for kippers if you want them. The service overall was very good. A parking permit was issued for parking on Renfrew street and they made no bones about giving us parking permits to keep our car on the street for a few hours after we checked out (nice not to have to move the car between checking out and leaving the city, especially if you intend to sightsee after checkout.)

Victorian House is close to the Glasgow School of Art and Sauchiehall Street, which is a major shopping/dining area. If you don't mind walking, you can hit most of the major sights from here. The Cowcaddens subway stop is the closest, about 6 blocks NE. The immediate area of the hotel was not pretty, but it seemed safe. If we were visiting Glasgow again, we'd consider staying at Victorian House.

We stayed at the Victorian House Hotel for 2 nights whilst attending our son's graduation. We had also previously stayed for 1 night during May. We found the staff friendly and helpful. During our May stay we realised that our elderly parents (who would be joining us in July) would be unable to climb the stairs to any of the rooms on the upper floors. At this stage we requested a ground floor room for them and staff immediately accommodated us.

Staff assisted with every reasonable request including arranging a taxi for us on the day of the graduation.

The hotel overall was great value for the price paid. If we had to make one complaint it would be in regards to the shower, which invariably leaked when used, flooding the bathroom floor each time. Also there was a fusty smell from the shower curtain.

Overall we had a very pleasant time at the hotel, even our parents enjoyed it. The location is very central to the shopping district, cinemas etc. but a little bit hilly for the elderly.

“Great room and generous breakfast!”

By the time my husband and I arrived at the Victorian House, we had been to Aberdeen, Orkney, and Inverness, and had wonderful accommodations in each place. We weren't too optimistic with the Victorian since it's in Glasgow and our room only costs 60 pounds a night.

What a pleasant surprise! We were assigned to Room 39 on the first floor. It was a big, bright, south-facing room with high ceilings, a bay window, a closet, desk with drawers, a sitting area, and a modern bathroom. We were flabbergasted! We were expecting a cramped room and here we are in a suite that easily could have fit 2 queen beds with room to spare. To top it all, we had no neighbors (our window looks out to the terrace and Renfrew Street)) so we had absolute privacy and peace and quiet. Outside our window is a flowerbox with colorful blooms. I had to doublecheck at the front desk that we would still be charged 60 pounds for this room.

Breakfast the next day was another surprise. The dining room was lovely with a view of the garden. It was a buffet breakfast too! Guests could have as much toast, cereal, fruit, juice, tea, coffee, yogurt as they want. There is even an automatic coffee machine so we had cappuccino, latte, or espresso for breakfast. For the cooked breakfast, guests could go to the counter and request eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, grilled tomato, black pudding, or haggis from the friendly chef Alan McClellan. Because we had such a generous breakfast, at times we'd just nibble on a snack for lunch.

The hotel's location is excellent. It's on a quiet street one over from busy Sauchiehall Street. The pedestrian shopping district is probably 10 - 15 minutes walk away. The Glasgow School of Art is a stone's throw away. We easily walked to the bus and train stations. The transportation system in Glasgow is excellent, and we figured out easily which bus went where.

The only quibble I have is with the bed. The mattress is probably on its last legs and the hotel might want to consider changing it within the next few weeks. I like a firm mattress and this was on the soft side. However, I did not get a back ache, so perhaps the bed wasn't that bad after all.

The hotel staff was professional and efficient, and that is perfectly fine with us. Certainly, the desk personnel won't be the cheerful, gushing, jovial hosts some people may have encountered in smaller B&Bs and would also expect at the Victorian. We are experienced travelers so we generally do not like to be fawned over and to be given directions and instructions by hotel and B&B hosts.

Glasgow was a pleasant surprise for us. We did not realize that the city has done a really excellent job revitilizing itself (we remember the Glasgow of 2 decades ago). Now, we can't wait to go back! And if we do go back, we won't hesitate to reserve a room at the Victorian again.

“Bed and "Best" Breakfast”

We stayed at the Victorian House Bed and Breakfast and enjoyed every minute. The location, on Renfrew Street, was perfect and everything was in walking distance. The breakfast was absolutely terrific. The atmosphere is quiet, respectful and warm. The steep stairs to the rooms were a bit difficult for the elderly but all in all very nice.

If you have a chance request the pine floored rooms, they are larger and have a bit more character. Best of all it's quiet. No roudy people outside to disturb you.

It's not an "American" hotel but very clean, it truly grows on you, and we'll stay again.

“Nice and Reasonable Cost”

Victorian House

I stayed with a friend for three nights at Victorian in April of 2005. I was not thrilled with several flights of stairs while taking luggage up. The room was on the front of the building and had a nice bay window. Tall ceilings and very nicely decorated. The beds were fairly small but comfortable.

One issue I had with the room was that the shower stall was very small. I'm short and of average weight and found it cramped. For someone elderly or large/tall, it could be a problem. Also, no matter how you pulled the curtain, the floor managed to become flooded and soaking the carpet just outside the door.

Other than no elevator and the shower issue, the hotel was nice with the front desk always being polite and helpful. Housekeeping was not quite so polite when asked questions, but I found this to be with only one person working there.

For people without issues climbing stairs or in need of a longer/wider bed, this is a very good value. I would stay there again because of the location and style of room I had. However, I would make sure to request a front room. From what I could see in other locations in the hotel, they are the only ones to have decent space for two or more people.
