Hope Eat Cafe in Shawlands isn't resting on its laurels already after getting a couple of good reviews from the local press. On the strength of one of them, we decided to try Eat one night as it looked and sounded so good. We were excited by this new addition to our neighbourhood. Having passed by many times, we were lured in by the fresh menu and excellent looking cakes on show.
Bad idea and very bad food left a very bitter taste in out mouths. Won't ever be back & so very disappointed. First and foremost, this place is well over priced and NOT value for money. To start with it was £14 for a shared Mezze starter which sounded lovely but in reality was a disgrace. 2 stale bits of pitta bread, a spoon of tzatziki, one of cous cous, a small dish of olives, a few cubes of feta, tiny amount of ground peanuts (?) and some dressed salad leaves which didn't go with anything and looked as thought they were there to fill out some space. You can get a 3 course meal in upmarket restaurants in Glasgow for £14 for goodness sake! If it had been good ingredients in a decent quantity, it would have been fine but I hate hate hate being ripped off and that's exactly what it was.
Mushroom risotto (£9) had no flavour, was unseasoned and only a ramekin full of parmesan cheese (which we had to ask for) made it palatable. Had to leave hard woody bits of mushroom on the side of the plate as they were completely inedible. Was looking forward to a nice burger and fries (£10.50) and couldn't eat much of it. Skinny, skin-on fries were served in a metal pot and were floppy and greasy. Burger was flavourless and bun was stale. Chipotle mayonnaise made it taste burnt.
Really wanted to like Eat Cafe but its far too expensive for what it is. We also had to wait 40 mins for our main courses. It ain't all that. Its a cafe in Shawlands - not fine dining.
