“the charm of a bygone era lingers”

Clifton Hotel

10 Jul 2008

I stayed at the Clifton on two occasions within a two week period. It felt like coming home the second time. The charm of a bygone era was in the large rooms, ceiling mouldings and wrought iron balustrades of this terraced townhouse. Both rooms I occupied were clean, comfortable and quiet and the service provided by Cathy and her staff excellent. I liked the setting near the Botanical Gardens and the university and I would go back again when in Glasgow.

“Comfort and atmosphere at the Clifton”

My sister and I stayed at the Clifton and were very pleased with
the friendly, helpful and courteous service and the very spacious, quiet and comfortable room and bathroom at the back of the hotel looking out on trees and gardens. An elevator would have been out of place but there was someone who kindly and promptly carried our cases upstairs. The place was spotless and clean. The breakfast was good. For those with an interest in architecture, the hotel is in a row of houses originally built for the well-off in an era where space was not at a premium. The ceilings are high with beautiful mouldings, there are still the original fireplaces, the staircases have lovely wrought iron balustrades and one can catch a glimpse of what gracious living must have been like in the house in its early days. We found the eclectic mix of furnishings intriguing and suggestive of fascinating histories - adding to the atmosphere. The hotel is right near the Botanic Gardens, the University of Glasgow and excellent restaurants are also within walking distance. A deconsecrated church across the street is now a pub and ballroom - so popular for university graduation balls (the lads in their kilts and the lasses in their long formal gowns were a wonderful sight!) that we could not get in for a look around, but we did see the bar which is furnished in excellent taste. The underground is close. A very convenient location all in all. Great for strolls around the area by day or night.
Would I stay there again? Yes indeed! In fact, my sister already has. We felt we had very good value for our money.

“Good and Bad”

I stayed at this hotel with my parents. They had a very large, light and airy double room on the 2nd floor with views to the botanic gardens to the side. I had a dungeon like dark and dingy extremely small double room on the basement floor, with it's window located under the external steps up to the front door, and bars on the (draughty) window!

Seeing the two different rooms it is easy to see why this hotel gets such mixed reviews; I think each guests experience will depend very much on which room they are allocated (tip: if possible, avoid the dungeon like basement!).

Overall there were nice touches but it struck me as looking 'shabby chic', a little worn around the edges.

Not the worst place in the world but not the best either....

“Good hotel, needs TLC”

Clifton Hotel

9 Jun 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Clifton and it is a lovely friendly place but does have some jarring edges which are suprising this quality inspected day and age. The building itself is a lovely old building with winding staircase over 3 floors and lovely high ceilings, and huge bathrooms and bedrooms. Comfy clean bedrooms.

Jarring edges is the huge television sat on a table in the reception/residents lounge blaring away 24x7, dunno why this is happening. Neon sign yeah kind of brings the tone down. Also several TV channels lose the signal every so minute or so so the TV emits a huge bzzzzzttt each time. Room 5 shower mounted slightly low so you need to stoop under it. No shampoo in the room. Most bedrooms doors are fairly dinted and need a proper rubdown and gloss. Tinned tomatoes and mushrooms at breakfast, although they tell you this as you order. Come on, it's not that difficult to switch to fresh veg!

But we loved Cathy who works so hard (hint give the lady a payrise) and the price was good so really it was fine.

Be aware the hotel is in the West End which is a good 30 minute walk to downtown Glasgow. But there are loads of good restaurants and bars and shops all around.

“Gorgous Honeymoon suite”

Clifton Hotel

31 Mar 2008

Stayed in this hotel for 1 night for our wedding anniversity. Please ignore the other reviews there is nothing wrong with this hotel. Get the honeymoon suite and you won't be disappointed.

Got welcomed at the door and was shown to the room, the room was absoluty enourmous containg a 4 poster bed, 3 piece suite, table and chairs for 4!!! All the furniture was antique and looked amazing in this room. The bathroom has black and white tiles, corner bath, wc and bidet. NO PROBLEMS WITH ROOM.

Breakfast wasn't that great but it was your table cereal, toast, bacon and eggs etc,

No regrets and would definatly recommend on staying here for a special night
