What with the nature of my job I can either get plenty time off or as in January find myself in to work every day ( after the Hogmanay celebration that is). We as a family tend to favour Aviemore as our chill out zone as we love TGO and skiing in particular. This has been our second visit to the Macdonald complex this year with our previous stay being in the Highlands Hotel just a couple of weeks ago . This time due to booking late we could only get the Academy Hotel which although not being so nice as the Highlands or as convenient for breakfast in Aspects is a very cozy , comfortable hotel. Sure the reception is a wee walk away as is the swimming pool but lets think about this folks and remember we are in the middle of the Cairngorm Park and that most people especially at this time of year are here for outdoor activities.
As I said we had a large , warm room with beds for four and in a good decorative state. The bathroom was not as large as over in the Highlands hotel but was clean and tidy. Judging by some of the photos on the Highlands hotel site I tend to think that there are reviewers who get the Highlands Hotel and the Highlands resort mixed up as the decor in the bathrooms are different ( trust me I have stayed in both many times).
As far as the food went we had dinner at the Scottish Steak Club at Dalfaber. My wife and I both had roast of the day , which was beef and it was superb. The fact that the place was very busy at half past eight serving food tells you its own story and as far as breakfast in Aspects is concerned well ....how else could you start the day. Having stayed at Hilton Coylumbridge twenty to thirty times over the last eighteen years or so I can assure you the famous 'Hilton Breakfast ' is not in the same league. Last time we stayed there in 2010 the one plus that their breakfast had which was whisky beside the porridge the bottle was empty!!!. Sometimes you do need the hair o' the hound first thing in the morning ( as long as the wife lets you that is).
As far as leisure facilities goes everything was working , sauna, steamroom, wave machine and flume.
Staffwise what can I say but top of the shop with the usual contenders Gina and Gordon competing for the gold star with Jo and Michael out at the Steak Club. Will we be back again? You bet . I have already booked another stay for the Kiltathon which will be held on March 3rd .To all you kilted braves out there , see you at the top and lets see if we can set another 'World Record'.
Just ask. They don't bite.
