Great way to spend a couple of hours as this place is steeped in history, you can almost hear the clashing of steel and roar of gun fire as you stand on the battlefield itself. The film in the visitor centre is informative & we really enjoyed the "living history" bit where a soldier describes what it was like on the battlefield. Imagination and a love of history are required! As an aside the Clava Cairns are not too far from Culloden and are well worth a visit.

Well done film and display explains the history. Hard to imagine this life! The history presented here came up again and again as we visited other historic sites around the country.

We visited Culloden in May, 2006, using our British Heritage Pass (well recommended- saved us over A$1000 each in entrances on our 30 day drive).
The Scottish "warrior", complete with kilt & weapon, who gave the talk was well worth coming for alone (amusing & very informative). He explained all the armour & weapons to us, & how it was used and described the battle vividly.
But there was more.
An accompanying film added to the history leading up to the battle & its bloody aftermath.
There was a museum display (very good) , buildings & then to battlefield itself. The day we went was damp & it was easy to imagine how difficult it would have been for the clans to fight their way through the bog. The wind was whistling as we walked over the battlefield looking at the stones representing the defeated clans.
By the way this was the last battle fought on British soil - something I learned there.
I learnt a lot about Scottish history here & thoroughly enjoyed doing so!
