Just back from The Royal Highland and I must admit I was slightly concerned after reading some of the comments. We were a party of 6 and on arrival there was only 1 family room booked instead of 2, however if was sorted very quickly. The main entrance stair case is amazing and the rooms are huge and very nice, the hotel is an older hotel, but very nice. We had a £40 voucher for the restaurant and we only had to put £10 towards our 3 course meal, the meal was excellent as the service. Also we had a voucher for half price drink after our first one. The toilets downstairs are huge and very nicely decorated. I would recommend this hotel for service / food / decor and central base. We are already planning to return.

My family decided to go to Scotland for holiday. We hired a big MPV to carry all 8 of us and headed to Inverness.

We arrived at the hotel and found that although on their website they claimed to have a carpark, there were only a handful of spaces and they were all taken. On the other side of the carpark, there was a trainstation and that side of the carpark had signs everywhere to inform people that they need to pay to park and maxim parking was only 2 hours.

I went to the reception to check us all in and to ask if there are any where we could park, I was told that there is only one multistorey carpark . When I asked if our MPV would be able to get in, he told me that might be a problem. I then asked if there are any other carpark nearby, he said no. By this point, he looked really bothered. I then pointed out the fact that there are 8 of us booked into the hotel and would really appreciate his help in guiding me to find somewhere to park our MPV, to which he replied " they do not like people parking in town so you'll not find anywhere to park!"

I had never felt so insulted. I checked all of us in and decided to go ask the staff in the trainstation if we could possibly park on their side of carpark and luckily they were very helpful and agreed that we could park until 7am the next morning free of charge.

We then all went to check out the rooms and found that the wallpaper were peeling off, paint flaking, bothroom not very clean. The worst this was that my bedroom window had a big crack and I have a young son who was 7.

The following morning, I decided to make a formal complaint to the duty manager and she did apologised. She also suggested that I put things down in writing which I did. I requested to be contacted with regards to how they dealt with the reception staff and 8 months on I'm still waiting.

“Flatters to deceive”

Royal Highland Hotel

2 Aug 2007

Was looking forward to staying in the Royal as it promised to be a classy Scottish hotel. However this thought was soon shattered after getting into my room - tiny single on the top floor with a lovely view of the railway station roof next door. After enduring regular train announcements window had to be closed to get some peace and quiet.
Room decor is tired and past it's sell by date. I managed to get it at a knock down rate of £80 pn, but as with many older UK hotels, this is well over the top for the standard of accomodation you get. It is no wonder Travel Inns do so wellwhen they are competing against this type of hotel.
Ash restaurant more like a glorified bar snack Nothing appealing on the menu and over priced.
Breakfast was awful - the room is like a barn and is set up as if for school dinners. Staff were very poor and had to clear away someone else's bacon and egg remnants so that I could eat. Standard buffet set up, but food was dried out and not replenished quickly.
Best thing about the hotel is it's location being very central - this at least makes it easy to find somewhere else to eat.
Glad it was only for one night.

Lovely reception area.....tired rooms/dining area.....below average breakfast and pretty poor service. Parking is a nightmare.

I booked through Laterooms and only paid half the normal rate. There's no way I'd have paid the full rate for the room.

I wouldn't stay here again.

“Skanky Hotel !”

Royal Highland Hotel

This hotel has rested on its laurels. From before I stepped in, it was looking bad. There was a couple of gents in wheelchairs but the ramp is too steep and slippy in the wet for a wheelchair, so i had to help them in.

My room was in the gods and was awful ! Damp patches everywhere, room too small for a double bed and plaster falling off the walls and ceiling. Reception were not too keen to change my room but eventually did. Next the chef was finished for the evening so I couldn't get any food. The bar couldn't put anything on my room or take a credit card. all in all a bad experience. At £80 a night this is not a good hotel !
