Just a couple of weeks ago my husband and I stayed a night at Castle Stuart. It was amazing. We stayed in the MacLachlan Room which is at the very top of the West tower. Another couple was staying the night as well but they were at the very top of the East tower in the honeymoon suite. First of all, the grounds are absolutely gorgeous with a tree lined drive as you make your way up. My husband and I were worried that we would be in a place that "says" it's a castle but when you get inside it's just a modern B&B. We were so wrong. They tried to keep the feel of the castle as close to the Jacobean times as possible, from the furniture to the artwork. For the MacLachlan suite, you have a small bathroom in the room itself. Very small, toilet and sink, really, but perfectly useful for those middle of the night trips! When you walk out of the room, you go down about 5 steps and through another room before going down about 4 more steps into a full bathroom, complete with full size bath (a rarity in Scotland, we found). On the stairs going up to the room itself there is a privacy gate, so that you can block off other guests from getting any higher than that spot, effectively creating a private suite despite the fact that you go through the main stair to get to the large bathroom. Add to that the MacLachlan suite has a private view of the battlements. JUST GORGEOUS. And even more special since, if you have this room, the view is yours and yours alone. The Honeymoon suite did not have this view. The room itself was very large with a gas fireplace and chairs, your typical tea/coffee setup, white and red wine, chocolates and treats everywhere, nail kits, sewing kit, shoe care kit. All complimentary. A lovely setup. Please note that if you visit the website, the pictures of the rooms and entire castle do NOT do it justice. There is a whole section behind and to the left that is not shown in the picture. Since we were the only ones in that tower, Caroline left the rooms open so we could look at them as well. All of the rooms were wonderful with similar setups.
The rest of the house was SO much fun. A secret doorway to get to the diningroom, which was gorgeous. The dinner was superb and the company was great. Getting piped in by the bagpiper was an experience! Both couples sat at at the main table, which allowed for some group conversation but private conversation as well. Breakfast was served in the same room, only at the side nook tables. We spent several hours before dinner playing chess and snooker in the billiard room, with a few drinks, and a few hours after dinner reading in front of the huge fire in the drawing room. My only complaint was that I ate SO much at dinner that it was uncomfortable to sit down afterwards! The secret entrances to these rooms were so interesting too!
All through the drawing room are books, snacks and treats, as well as music playing. A wonderful honesty bar was set up as well. You had choices of cookies, chocolates, fresh fruit, tea, hot chocolate, coffee, etc. There were genuine Stuart Family pictures scattered about, letting you know this wasn't just a tourism spot, this was a family home. There were a range of books and magazines on Scotland and Scottish topics. Had I not brought my own book, I would not have suffered!
The great hall was not something we "used" although we did spend some time in there looking around. This would be perfect for a wedding or a large party.
Caroline, our hostess was so wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and very gracious, however she was not stuffy and made us to feel very welcome and comfortable. The grounds were great and we can only imagine how they would look in the summer or spring.
We got there as early as we could for check-in and stayed until the last possible minute as we did NOT want to leave. All in all a wonderful castle stay and we will definitely go back. You felt transported in time with all of the modern ammenities!
note: We visited Culloden Battlefield before the castle, that morning. Much of the artwork in the castle pertains to the Bonnie Prince Charlie and having visited Culloden to hear the story brought the artwork home. We'd recommend doing that so you are more familiar with the story.
