“Embarrasment to Scotland”

Nevis Bank Hotel

20 Jul 2008

On arrival into the car park it was obvious this was an unkept hotel. Broken guttering with water dripping everywhere, unkept garden area. The lady on reception (dark brown hair) very rude, when they changed our daughters to another room to accomodate other guests she became very rude and hostile because our daughters had gone out that day and forgot to give the room key, started ranting that they were unable to get into room all day to clean it and change linen as they only had one key, think that is a matter for health and safety if this is true. Again same women made us feel unwanted in hotel to the point when sitting in the bar having a drink we felt so uncomfortable we returned to our room. Think she would have been glad of the business as we were the only couple in the bar that night (wonder why). (needs to think of another career, hospitality not suited to her). The rooms were unclean, they do not change the duvet cover inbetween guests leaving and arriving. Our shower in room 43 did not work had to leave that day without showering. On the day of our departure went down to reception to inform our shower not working nobody at reception. The waiter serving breakfast was also trying to run the reception. Went down for breakfast at 8am and waited until 8.50am before our order was taken, clear that they are well understaffed. On settling the bill tried to charge us an extra £100.00 for room, but lucky we had conformation of price and booking via email. Noticed also when people off the street were coming in asking for rooms the prices changed each time.

The only positive thing to say about the hotel was the lady with short blonde hair on reception the scottish waiter and the breakfast which was lovely.

“Friendly Warm welcome”

Nevis Bank Hotel

I stay'ed at the nevis bank for a two day stay in june 2008,
After reading the reviews on here i can honestly say i was more than a little apprehensive about my stay.

Upon arrival we were greeted in reception by the hotel owner/manager who made us feel right at home and made us a cup of tea, while we waited for our room to become available,we arrived more than 4 hours before check in time but this was no trouble to the staff who made us most comfortable and quickly got our room ready for us

I could say that the rooms were a little dated but truth'fully they were of a standard typical of the area and no worse than anywhere else, they were however exceptionally clean

we dined on our second night in a large group of 20 walkers and the kitchen staff all worked well over the kitchen time to provide some excellent meals.

overall id not hesitate to recommend the nevis bank to any body
and look forward to returning in the not too distant future

I stayed at this hotel a few years ago and it's obvious that now those owners have upped-sticks and moved on, that the place has gone seriously downhill since their departure. I'm not going to reminisce about times past, but let's just say that back then the hotel was a thriving, happy, always full, place.

Nowadays it's a far cry from that. The week I stayed there, the hotel was on the front page of the local newspaper. Apparently the management were having some problems with money (well, who wouldn't, when you put flat-screen tv's in all the rooms and don't pay for smaller repairs). So much so that the staff were having to pay the supplier's bills out of their own pocket.

The hotel has gone from being a thriving little goldmine to a den of despair. The food is worse now than it was (and back in the day, it was excellent.) The staff don't seem to care for the guests. I had a relatively small problem with an iron in one of the rooms and was told by the receptionist to "go to Argos".

I won't be staying here again.

My stay at the Nevis Bank Hotel featured a series of problems. First of all, when I arrived at 7pm my room had not been serviced. Staff were quick to remedy this however, this was only the beginning of what turned out to be a lo....ong overnight stay.

The radiator in the room was not working and there was no hot water. I went to the dining room at 8.20 having been told that as long as I was down by 9pm that was fine - the chef was very flexible. The service was extremely slow and other guests' comments were that their experience was similar. The dining room was very cold. Service was so slow - 10 minutes before I was offered a menu to look at and then another 5 minutes before taking my order - that it was 9.20 before I had finished my main course. I was asked if there was anything else I would like but when I asked for dessert was told that they had stopped serving for the evening and the only thing I could get was a coffee or drink from the bar.

I went up to my room and was speaking to my husband on my mobile phone when the fire alarm went off. I went down to reception and it was apparent that staff didn't know the procedures. No attempt appeared to be made to check on guests' safety. When the fire brigade arrived, I heard the lead fireman saying to staff that the alarm had gone off because a break glass had been 'repaired' with sellotape. He said that they had been called out previously and found the break glass in the same unrepaired condition. He would be reporting the hotel and someone would come out to inspect it to make sure proper repairs were made. The fire brigade would have been within their rights to close the hotel down on the spot.

I went back to my room and was in bed reading when the alarm went off again. It stopped but then sounded intermittently for three or four second bursts for 5-10 minutes, which suggests that staff were fiddling with it.

The following morning there was still no sign of heat in the radiator or hot water. I went down to breakfast which was promptly served and was hot. However, I became conscious of a dripping noise and looking around noticed that there was a large cooking pot on the floor which was being used to catch water leaking in from the roof.

I disagree with the comments about staff attitudes to guests with the exception of the slowness of service and response to the fire alarm. I found the staff were friendly and pleasant.

The hotel could do with updating and TLC as another reviewer has mentioned but was clean. The food I had was well cooked. The sad thing is it is possible to see how the hotel could be made really good. All of the rooms and public areas were equipped with flat screen TV but with TV reception so poor (it was only really possible to watch BBC1) it would have been better spending the money on doing things like repairing the break glass for the fire alarm and sorting out the heating.

Although the cost of the hotel is modest, the issues I encountered fell short of even basic standards of service and the issue with the fire alarm was potentially very dangerous.

This hotel really needs to get its priorities right.

“Good staff”

Nevis Bank Hotel

13 Jan 2008

I recently spent a night in the Fort William area having travelled up from Windemere.

I did not book a room in Fort William due to the fact that most of my trips are spur of the moment. I was passing through the town and pasted the Nevis Bank Hotel and it looked ok.

I went inside to enquire if the Htoel had any rooms which they did. I was given a upgrade due to the fact they were not too busy.

The room was nothing special but clean and tidy and a brilliant flat screen TV only a pity I did not come to Fort William to watch TV.

During the brief stay I found the staff to be very friendly and the Hotel OK but in need of a little TLC but it was good value for money.

Should I return to Fort William I will be happy to stay at the Nevis Bank again
