We stayed at the Moorings for 2 nights on our recent holiday touring the Scottish Highlands.
The hotel is set in a lovely quiet area about 2 miles from the centre of Fort William. Behind the hotel is the Caledonian Canal and Neptune's Staircase, (ladder of eight locks) with some lovely walks and views of Ben Nevis.
The hotel is a cosy place to stay. We had a family room which was very comfortable with a nice bath area and good tea/coffee making facilities. I would have been keen to use the new upgraded rooms with views of the canal, but these were full during our stay. (next time).
The big plus with this hotel is the food. We only ate in the bar area but the food was excellent with a great choice. I gather the main restaurant is also of a high standard. A word of warning, if you plan to eat from the bar menu, get there early as local people also come in to enjoy the food and it gets very busy. The first night we were there, we went down at 8pm and there were no seats (you can't pre-reserve in the bar area). Not a problem as the very friendly waitress sorted out some drinks for us and made sure we didn't have to wait long (about 15 minutes).
The breakfast was also very good with orders taken when you sit down, so everything is fresh.
I have read some negative remarks about The Moorings, particulary with reference to weddings. Fortunatley we were there mid-week and found the service and atmosphere to be fine.
One small point. I do wish that some of the staff smiled more. When you approached any staff member they were always courteous and friendly but sometimes remained unsmiling. Cheer up..you have a lovely hotel!
