On returning to Scotland after 12 years I was pleased to hear my parents had booked myself, my Aussie wife and 3 kids for a 3 night stay between Christmas and Hogmanay.
Pleased until I read some of the negative reviews previously listed so downplayed the hotel to my family before arrival.

My experience was a very positive one.

We stayed in a family room which was clean, warm and spacious. The only complaint was that it was above the bar area and on one night the accordian players downstairs didn't finish at 10.30 pm as advertised but got too enthusiastic and didn't finish until after 11, so kids couldn't get to sleep .
We found the dining room more than adequate for breakfast, while we had the set menu each night and found the food to be quite varied but good quality and good size of servings. Staff were all non-Scottish but when treated with respect and common courtesy ( which some previous reviewers obviously have a problem with) they were very efficient and friendly.

The leisure facilities were very good with a reasonable sized ( for a hotel) gym/ cardio area and the pool was clean and warm, the kids loved it.

Overall the hotel gives very good value for money for our family of 5. Given that it is listed as a one or at best two star hotel, it certainly surpasses expectations for a hotel of that standard. Give it a fair go...., if you expect the Ritz or Hilton standards, pay the extra money and stay there instead.

As a simple, basic, clean hotel to use as a base to visit the Highlands, I would certainly use it again.

We were staying at this hotel in transit from point A to point B so really weren't expecting much. The room was fine and we actually had a nice view of the countryside from our window. We were able to go on a nice walk by the river in the evening so an added bonus and see the double horned sheep. WE did feel like a senior center though as there was mostly sliver haired folks staying here and in the dance floor. There was good internet connection in the bar area and the meals were fine.

After reading some of the reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. On checking in, we were given our key and told to go across to the other building. The room was at very end of building on 1st floor - there are no lifts so pack light! On entering the very tired looking room we were hit by how cold it was, on checking the heating it wasn't on and the TV didn't work. We contacted Reception to be told that it didn't come on until 5pm and would send someone to check out tv - so we headed to bar. On returning to room, heating was still not working and no sign of someone fixing tv, so call made to Reception where they offered to move us to a twin room for first night, then to a double when another became available. Second room was in main building and was considerably better than first. The next day, on pestering reception we moved again, across to other building where we got one of the recently refurbished rooms - which were quite nice.

The breakfast was ok on day one, but try eating it for 5 days and becomes a chore....suggest going for breakfast as soon as it opens as it was kept warm over a couple of hours, which became like rubber! Was surprised that there was no potato scones!

Dinner in the main restaurant was a joke. Staff poorly trained, and chef could do with a kick up the behind. Set menu for £21.95 was a complete rip off - and very disappointing to boot...on our last night we dined again in main restaurant and ordered the sirloin steaks - staff didnt know what medium to well done meant and steak had more fat than meat. When asked how our meal was, told the staff very disappointing and they just walked off.

My list of negative points for this hotel is endless.

The plus for this hotel is the leisure club - swimming pool, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi - which is free to guests staying in the hotel. Nice big bath towels provided and free lockers.

We booked for three nights. The food was good with fresh locally sourced products served by friendly staff. The room and bathroom were both clean and adequate. The swimming pool and gym were exceptionally good.

This hotel offers good overall value without the pretentious luxury that some of the other reviewers expected.

stayed at this hotel in dec, having read some of the negative revfiews i have to say, some people dont understand what the term, you get what you pay for means. i am sure that some of your negative reviewers joined that ever growing club full of thoose people that think if you complain hard enough then there will be a discount in the offing. i found this hotel to be excellent. a little dated in areas but i understand that strathmore hotels are improving more rooms this year. bar, food, restaraunt, leusire club all excellent.trip advisor is an excellent site however please people if you have to say something, then please let it be accurate.
